Dear all,

probably a very silly question but just in case anyone has a pre-dawn knowledge Big Grin

I have one of these:

Mcintosh SE

I've hung on to it for ages as it has some data on it that I wouldn't want to lose for ever. I haven't looked inside it yet to even know what the hard drive interface is (early scsi?)

Trying to clear space for imminent arrival of small mini steeb. What are my chances of just ripping out the hard drive and trying to interface it with something to grab the data off and archive it to my windows platform?

Big Grin

you'll need a SCSI controller with a single-ended 50pin interface (or the necessary adapters) and an HFS file system driver.

edit: actually this reminds me that a customer gave me an old external mac hard drive that I'm supposed to try to read one of these days..

once you're able to access the drive, this should do it for you: http://www.catacombae.org/hfsx.html

Depending on the amount of data, you could just try a peer-to-peer serial connection to your PC and run some sort of file transer app.

I remember 20-something years ago using a version of Kermit to transfer files off a Mac of some sort. Blooming slow but you could just set it up and walk away until it's done. Just a thought.

Cheers,
Brian

or if its not too much data, and the old floppy drive still works there may be a way to read the floppies on a PC. Particularly if that Mac SE is the version with the "FDHD Superdrive".

Thank you Mr Johnson (I always have to call you that because I am a Mr Johnson too! Makes me feel @ home). Hmmmm 50pin scsi. This will be the 1st hurdle Big Grin

cheers

The floppy drive is nearly dead, and quite honestly my only server with a floppy has had problems for ages... I don't think floppy here... no more ... :o

Thanks Brian, another good thought. I did think about some kind of serial transfer, but I really just want to dump it all and hold on to the hard drive. Hmmmm does not mean that also is not a bad idea Big Grin

Well if it is a quick clear-out you need then do just that. You might be able to utilise the internal cable if you can find a PC SCSI card with the same connector. I'm guessing eBay is likely to be your best bet.

Hmmm yes, ebay may be the solution, I've just dug around, I have a 68 pin scsi card and a server scsi backplane, (didn't count the pins!) but they were more than 50 deffo)

hmmmm Big Grin
