I'm not sure how I came about this in my system tray but I opened it and had these options:

I'm not sure what I did other than setup W7 Windows Media Center, something I'd never done on this machine. When the app is in the system tray it shows strange little balloon text with the suggestion of 3 tuners. What is this, and what do these options do? What's all this talk about moving the MCE recording?

I do change the channel on my cable box via Firewire but I don't believe I've seen this thing before. And in any event, inadvertently closed the app and now it's gone. I don't know how it got there or what it was, but it looks interesting. Smile

I came from why you or someone else installed firewireSTB on your system. If you have a STB that will send the streams to a PC via firewire MCE would also make a digital recording along w/ the analog one from the capture card, this part of the software allows to automatic do exactly as it states to the analog recording.

I installed the Windows 7 legacy FireWire drivers a long time ago for channels the channels on my STB. However this particular utility just popped up in my system tray, I believe yesterday after setting up WMC.

I don't have an analog capture card on the system but what you're saying is the WMC recognizes you're recording from the STB and, if a FireWire capture is possible and successful, you can tell the system to save it and delete the analog copy? Clever, but can WMC record directly from the STB's FireWire? I couldn't find any reference to FireWire at all in WMC.

Anyway, thanks for response.

With the timmmoore drivers, SGraphRecorder and my network tuner you might be able to record copy freely channels via firewire in NPVR too. I say "might" because Windows firewire is flakey,

Years ago I got thus working, but I found some of the big networks flipped copy freely on and off depending on the show being broadcast. It was annoying since it was unpredictable. I'm wondering if I find any difference now, several years later, with the DCR-2650. Hopefully not, but I haven't had time to experiment yet.

IIRC the main purpose of creating firewirestb was to get HD digital records from STBs since at the time the analog capture card only had composite and/or S-video, not until more recently did we get component.

From my experience copy flags seemed to have little to do w/ being able to capture streams via firewire on a PC from a STB as I've tested it on my FiOS which has everything flagged copy freely but only only found a few channels that would work(ABC is the only HD channel I remember working, other local networks like CBS didn't). I was able to view all channels via firewire on my TV as did channel changing, menus however wouldn't show up via firewire. IIRC 5C wasn't enabled on ABC but it was on the other channels like CBS but even though all(that even includes premium channels for me) are flagged copy freely the STB would pass them to the PC's firewire port since they don't support 5C.
