So I tried following this guide (PDF) to setup my HDHomerun Prime with NextPVR. I'm able to add the first tuner fine and scan my channels. The problem happens when I edit the XML file to add the last two tuners. When I open the device settings, I still only see one NetworkRecorder device (I'm not sure if this is supposed to be the case), and when I click that NetworkRecorder device and select Device Setup, I get this error:

"Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

Here's the NPVR log. Let me know if you need anything else. Edit: sorry, I can't seem to get the log to upload. I'll just paste it.

And this is what my NetworkRecorder.xml file looks like:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<Settings>
<PluginSettings>
<NetworkRecorder id="20" instance="1">
<FriendlyName>HDHR 1</FriendlyName>
<host>127.0.0.1</host>
<port>6972</port>
<delay>2000</delay>
</NetworkRecorder>
</PluginSettings>
<PluginSettings>
<FriendlyName>HDHR 2</FriendlyName>
<host>127.0.0.1</host>
<port>6978</port>
<delay>2000</delay>
</NetworkRecorder>
</PluginSettings>
<PluginSettings>
<FriendlyName>HDHR 3</FriendlyName>
<host>127.0.0.1</host>
<port>6975</port>
<delay>2000</delay>
</NetworkRecorder>
</PluginSettings>
</Settings>

You wouldn't normally use the NetworkRecorder plugin for accessing a HDHomeRun.

If you install the SiliconDust software, then the HDHR should show up in your devices list.

Then why are those directions posted on the website? Do both methods accomplish the same thing?

You are missing the start tags in bold. Note that I only copied and pasted so the ID and instance might need to be changed. (Martin may have to guide you on that.)

Note I believe there is native support for the HDHR Prime so I am not sure why you are using NetworkRecorder, but in any case that XML file is wrong try this.

Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>

<Settings>
    <PluginSettings>
    <NetworkRecorder id="20" instance="1">
        <FriendlyName>HDHR 1</FriendlyName>
        <host>127.0.0.1</host>
        <port>6972</port>
        <delay>2000</delay>
    </NetworkRecorder>
    <NetworkRecorder>
        <FriendlyName>HDHR 2</FriendlyName>
        <host>127.0.0.1</host>
        <port>6978</port>
        <delay>2000</delay>
    </NetworkRecorder>
    <NetworkRecorder>
        <FriendlyName>HDHR 3</FriendlyName>
        <host>127.0.0.1</host>
        <port>6975</port>
        <delay>2000</delay>
    </NetworkRecorder>
    </PluginSettings>
</Settings>

Yes. I was actually working on a third option but abandoned it for fear it would confuse users too much.

I've never seen it before. Maybe it was posted a long time ago before NextPVR had built in support for the HDHR Prime.

Maybe. I dont know what that NetworkRecorder plugin method would have done, or how well it would have worked.

No never, ever add id or instance, those get added by the plugin when this xml file gets merged into the npvr.db3
