Just picked up the 2650 from new eggs black friday sale, got it working great with windows media center / cable card. But I would really prefer to use xbmc for everything. From what I have seen NPVR is the only available front end that wil support the cable card. So my first question is this actually possible?

Currently I am stuck with the black screen of death issue. Dont know if its a codec/decoder problem or somthing else I missed in the setup.

Steps I have taken
Activated cable card tuner with Windows Media Center/Cable Company. Have it working on premium channels inside Windows Media Center
Downloaded NEXT PVR and installed
Downloaded the HD Homerun software so NPVR can detect the card.
Scanned for channels
changed my buffer/record location to my usb 3.0 hard drive

when scanning the channels initially it said that channels are mpeg2
I have tried both MPEG decoders (Microsoft DTV-DVD video Decoder and Dscaller Mpeg2 Video Decoder) I am using EVR for video Render.

Windows 7 PC
Ivy bridge i3 with intell 4000 integrated graphics

so whats next?

NextPVR can only access copy-freely channels via this type of device. Are you sure your channels are copy freely?

I have only tried using the local channels ABC/NBC (they should be). I have a feeling that the cable channels are not. How do I find out? And what is the next step if they are.

I'm not in states, and don't have one myself, so not the best person to advise. It has a built in web server on the device and you can use one of its status pages to check what protection level is used by the channel.

You could also try recording a channel. If it ends up zero bytes long, you probably need a firewall exclusion for nrecord.exe. If it's non zero, try playing it in another player like vlc. This will help rule out a decoder problem.

Some cable companies have all channels marked as copy-once or copy-never, and these channels can only be accessed in WMC.

From memory, run ipconfig to find the IP address of the dcr 2650 virtual network, then try visiting the xx.xx.xx.105 address in your browser for that subnet.

Thanks, that was easy and good to know.

Looks like local channels are free to access but anything that is cable only is copyonce

Unfortunately that wont be possible - with all the content protection requirements and astronomical licensing and security testing fees.
