Operating System: Windows 8 Pro
Most current version of NPVR
tuner: HDHomeRun (no cable card)
Channels picked up in HDHomeRun interface: basic over cable free digital channels
Goal: To get NPVR to work with the new XBMC 12.0 using my HDHomeRun box.

When I try to start the NPVR service the above message is what pops up. I do not know what this means.
So I launch NextPVR.
I go to settings -> devices I see my HDHomeRun box.
There are 3 types shown here: ATSC, QAM, and HDHR. Running a default scan on these results in no channels found. Any help on how to fix this would be appreciated!

Notes:
I have allowed NPVR through my firewall.
I do have NPVR selected as the source in HDHomeRun configuration.
Using the HDHomeRun viewer or WMC, the channels play fine.

The error message says "Recording Service was not found on computer ...". NextPVR uses a background service to do recordings and all that.

Try a reboot. If you still have problems, zip and attach the NPVR\Logs folder. See http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post438939

I tried rebooting. Is the background service something separate that needs to be installed? Does the NPVR service have to be started in order to be able to scan the channels? I'll get the logs as soon as I can.

Hi Takachsin,

NextPVR installation will install everything necessary including the background recording service. NextPVR does of course need to be running in order to scan for channels.

Start with posting the logs to establish why your build is throwing this exception.

cheers

And the recording service (nrecord.exe) does indeed need to be running to scan channels as it communicates with the tuners. AFAIK, the recording service is responsible for operating the tuners for recording or live TV and updating the EPG. Both nrecord and npvr.exe use the database (npvr.db) to store and access information about channels, tuners, recordings (completed and scheduled).

Alright, I understand it better now thanks steeb and mikeh49. I'll post the logs tonight after I get home from work.

You could try running the installer again as Administrator, right click on the installer and choose "Run as Administrator".

This worked, the service is now running but it is still not finding any channels. I cleared the logs, ran the scan on ATSC, QAM, and HDHR and they have found nothing. Side question, which of those 3 types should return channels?

Did you allow Nrecord.exe, Nextpvr.exe and NDigitalHost.exe through your firewall?

I have allowed 3 things through my firewall but I thought one was the logs. I will check, I'm pretty sure Nextpvr.exe is allowed.
