W/MS mpeg2 decoder:
seems to break vmr7 for me, [no picture anymore] makes vmr9 [not custom or fse] mess up aspect ratio and video doesn't completely fill screen.. W/MS h264: seems to break it completely...no video... W/Other decoders: no problem with cyberlink...seems to use less cpu... both h.264 and mpeg2 seem to work fine.. update breaks vmr7 for all decoders..on both mpeg2 and h264 types..

I tried creating a graph using the NPVR TS Reader2 and I cannot connect the mpeg-2 demux that NextPVR uses to the microsoft decoder, I get an error 0x80040200 I can use the decoder in some graphs so it is not not 100% locked.

In other words, this update is NOT recommended.

Control Panel->Programs and Features->View Installed Updates
(or Windows Update->View Update History->Installed Updates ends up in the same place) and then after you remove it, you can hide the update in Windows Update so that it won't ever be installed.

I haven't tested this through a reboot, but to confirm that the upgrade is a likely problem,
- I identified what I believe is the problem file msmpeg2vdec.dll (mine was in Windows\SysWOW64) - recovered the old version from explorer - changed the owner of the file from TrustedInstaller to Administrator - gave Administrator Full control - renamed the file - copied in the old version Code: Directory of C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msmpeg2vdec* After this h264 files play in NextPVR Everyone who relies on the Microsoft decoder should probably backup the original dll before doing any Microsoft updates, to avoid having to recover it. Do you know if this also causes problems with other software that might use it (eg Media Portal) or is it just an NPVR issue? It'll be good if the fix is as simple as Martin says, but it's another poke in the eye for new users none the less.

It will depend on how the graph is created, the problem seems to be connecting the mpeg-2 demux to the decoder, a splitter will connect. The change did survive a reboot, so know I'll have to wait for a system update to break it.
