So I have been using ArgusTV +XBMC with my Hauppauge 1250 for a little while using ATSC OTA broadcasts but I think I want to spring for an HDHR Prime and NPVR seems to be the best bet in terms of supporting that device. I did some forum searches and found answers to some/most of my questions but I am still a bit unclear about a few things and many of the threads are quite old.

Before I buy one I had a couple questions for those with experience using this solution (XBMC + NPVR + HDHR Prime):

Is this guide still accurate as to how to set up the HDHR Prime with NPVR?

http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...extPVR.pdf

Do I attach it to my primary HTPC via USB or Network?

Are there any issues with the performance? I get the feeling that using a network stream or DLNA (or however NPVR integrates with the device) might be slow or cumbersome, especially when it comes to channel switching.

What are the advantages to using a dedicated backend such as NPVR with the HDHR as opposed to the "native" XBMC integration (which seems sloppy)?

Any overall impressions or sources of frustration?

The device isn't particularly cheap so I'd like to be sure I know what I'm getting myself into before I spring for it.

You shouldn't have to do any of that. You can do it that way, but it's much easier to use the built in HDHR Prime support than have to worry about plugins and SageDCT.

It's a network device.

No, it's pretty good in my experience.

I haven't used on in XBMC, but I'm guessing the build in supports is mainly as a DLNA client, so probably not as nicer support for stuff like change channels, scheduling recordings etc.

How did you find that pdf. I did modify the wiki a while back to say that those instructions were really for the Ceton now that NextPVR has Prime support.

If you just want live tv, I wouldn't bother with a backend. On the other hand, what native support for the prime is there that supports recordings, comskip etc?

Seems like using a backend is superior to using native support at the moment, especially considering what you mentioned about recording.

As for how I found it: Search the wiki for "hdhomerun prime" first result is a link to this wiki page: http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...rkRecorder PDF is linked on that page.

On topic - Is the HDHomerun Prime supposed to get EPG data from my cable provider or do I still need to use an XMLTV source?

On topic ...

My question was OT, I want to help other new users from needing to ask corrections.

OK, you won't get an epg from cable so you need xmltv or even easier Schedules Direct (try the trial for a week) Just having an epg is another reason for a plugin.
