Is it possible to watch BBC iPlayer "Windows Media Player" file downloads via NextPVR? I thought as WMP and NextPVR share playback components it would work, but, I think the DRM is getting in the way as the picture and sound are both corrupted. Is there a way of getting the DRM manager stuff into the DirectShow stuff NextPVR uses for example?

I think the last work around gave up about two years ago when the BBC disabled it. The software pretended to be an iPhone so the server gave it access. I seem to remember instructions how to get it working with NextPVR but it no longer worked by then.

I really don't know anything about iPlayer, and what it does with DRM. Often the DRM will only work in a certain app though, since it needs keys to be feed to it by that application.

If you start graphedit, and select 'render media file' from the menu, then select one of these iPlayer files, does it manage to create a graph? if you click the 'play' button, do you see the video?

I just downloaded something from the iPlayer site and tried to render it in graphedit and it couldn't do it.

I suspected that'd be the case.

I can only get it to play properly in WMP.

I tried it with WinAmp and it showed a message saying "Obtaining licence" and played the audio without a problem but the video window was blank.

Examining it with ASF viewer shows various sections relating to DRM and encryption as I'd expect.

I can build a graph if I start with the "File Source (Async.)" filter and render the output pin but playback gives me what I think McBainUK is seeing - just a blocky mess of video and corrupt audio. The only filter I can find that suggests DRM capability on my system is a "Microsoft Kernel DRM Audio Descrambler" but I couldn't get that to connect to anything in the graph.

Cheers,
Brian

Same here with all the players tried: NextPVR, XBMC and VLC.

Same here, I guess that means i's a no go for iPlayer and NextPVR.

I grab iplayer stuff with get_iplayer and it ends up as an mp4 fine enough. Current version can use a web browser to search and record or setup as a pvr. A tad easier than the old command line version. http://linuxcentre.net/getiplayer
forget the linux bit, there is a windows installable version.

edit: - ISTR there was a gbpvr addon for get_iplayer?? giving a gbpvr interface to it.

An alternative to WMP might be iTunes for Windows, which is free.

xbmc has an iPlayer client. The issue is likely more about flash security than drm. I think bbc2 is a current problem. Source code is available http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-iplayerv2/ too.
