now then...
I may have errored. After much success in trying out the 8.1 preview on a couple of my machines I decided to upgrade the main rig that acts as a tv server. I'm sure we all know what happened next...nextpvr doesn't seem to want to cooperate. Tuners are all showing up and I've tested that they are installed correctly and working with dvbviewer.
If I try to scan in nextpvr I get unable to start device - device failed to start.

naturally I didn't take a backup as I like to live on the edge.
How screwed am I?

I am using 8.1 preview with an HDHR with no problem, you probably just forgot to update the firewall rules for NRecord, NDigitalHost and NextPVR

o I didn't know of the rule for ndigitalhost, i'll check that. how does the firewall prevent nextpvr being able to scan a device in the local machine though?

NextPVR communicates with the other parts (NRecord for example) using localhost network calls. The easiest way to test Martin's hypothesis would be to temporarily disable the firewall and see if a scan works. If it does then it's definitely a firewall issue.

You might try updating or uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers for the tuners, but quite possibly they haven't been revised for 8.1. I'm not sure why Martin was thinking HDHR. My hunch is BGT-3650.

Simple, because that is what I have running on 8.1 preview which seems to be the topic.

Bgt3650 is what I've got. I had uninstalled and deleted the drivers and then reinstalled but it still had the same issue. I figured that the drivers were not the issue as dvbviewer was working. On hope that's not the case as blackgold were pretty slack at officially supporting windows 8. Is there likely to be a need for new drivers for just moving to 8.1?

For BGT36xx models, only the 9.0.0.2 Beta driver supports Windows 8. We don't use DVB in the U.S. so I can only quote the Blackgold website:

"Please be aware this is a beta driver. There may be outstanding issues. If you encounter issues, please advise us via support@blackgold.tv"

Is it possible that your server was previously running NextPVR version 2.5.9, and you only updated to 2.6.2 after installing 8.1 preview? I ask because member Elmo Putney reported that his BGT3650 was working fine under 2.5.9 (Windows 7 and driver 8.1.1.2), but he got the "device failed to start" error after updating to 2.6.2 and therefore reverted to 2.5.9.

to give a bit more detail, I was running windows 8 32bit with the drivers previous to the current beta. not sure what blackgold are going on about with the compatibility but it worked fine for ages. This was on nextpvr 2.5.9 and then on 2.6.2 (both worked fine)
I then did a fresh install of windows 8 64 bit and at that point installed the beta 9.0.0.2 blackgold drivers with nextpvr 2.6.2, this was also working fine
I then installed 8.1 preview and I've been getting the device failed to start ever since
interestingly dvbviewer is working fine on 8.1 with the 9.0.0.2 drivers so does this not point to it not being a driver issue?
Would there be any logs that are worth checking that I can search for?
