Doesn't .net 4.5 overwrite 4.0 and then spoof 4.0 being present anyway? How is that handled by the installer?

NM (lack of sleep). 4.5 is an upgrade to 4.0. I was thinking 3.5/4.0. If you only had the 4.5 Client profile installed, it would have installed 4.0 Full profile. If you had the 4.5 Full, I'm not sure why it did the 4.0 install.

Oh, it gets worse. The machine in question only had 4.0 installed, no 4.5. Checking the install, the .net installer that NPVR ran didn't actually write any new files, but reported finished and everyone was happy... :confused:

You can fairly reliably check for the presence of a given version of DotNET by looking for the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\vX key (where X is the version to detect). Despite being a 32bit app, Microsoft don't abide by their own rules (shocker!) and put it in the native key regardless of what architecture the running OS is. (So HKLM\Software even if HKLM\Wow6432Node exists). The DotNET installer itself can just be run with the /q /norestart switches to do a silent install.
