cannot hear audio on some channels

Hi there
Some Australian TV channels such as Gem and ABC news 24 have no sound when using the live TV option.
They appear to use the AC3 audio codec, but no matter which codec I try, I cannot get any sound to play.
I downloaded and tried out the AC3 filter, and configured next pvr to use it, but I'm still not hearing any audio. Do you know why is this and is there a fix for this? I've tried several other codec such as the one used with snapstream and KB radio but it still won't work.
Oddly enough, if I record the show with next pvr and then play it in gom player, I can hear the audio perfectly.

you need to play with the merits of your decoders
use something like graph studio to see what the computer is trying to use when it plays the files back
then use gspot to change merit
I use klite codec pack to fiddle and select preferred decoders for the types of files ( others will know other ways but I fond this the easiest)
plus it load the lav decoder which works pretty well with the h264 stuff

AC3 audio is standard here in North America. I've been using AC3Filter for a year and would recommend that you stick with that decoder. Many audio decoders (including Microsoft's) will not deliver AC3 to third-party applications. LAV is also a good free decoder for AC3, but I think there is some problem other than your choice of decoder.

Do the problem TV channels have more than one audio track? I recall a thread in which one TV channel had a superfluous dead AC3 track that NextPVR was attempting to play by default. Of course you can investigate that by tuning a problem channel, right-clicking and manually selecting different audio tracks. Are they all described as [AC3, eng] and does one of them work?

If that isn't the problem, I would be curious about your audio output. Rather than PC speakers, are you perhaps using HDMI connected to a TV or SPDIF connected to a sound system?

@hyperactive: post logs showing you playing channels that don't have sound. Zeb's tips are spot on as well; have you ensured AC3Filter is properly configured for your audio setup?

@stustunz: filter merit wouldn't be involved when playing live tv or recordings. NPVR builds the graph with the filters you've chosen.

Hi there.
Yes, I've checked the audio streams in the channel, and there is only 1 audio stream available.
Curiously, all the other mpeg channels such as 9 melbourne, channel ten digital play with perfect audio without a problem. I did not have to adjust anything in the codec setup to get it to play. I can record tv and play it with gom player and hear the audio without any issues.
I do not use any special sound setup. it's simply a set of speakers plugged into the soundcard, the tv tuner is a kaiser baas tv stick.
I even tried installing the KB radio application and getting next pvr to use the ac3 codec that came with it, but I'm still not hearing any audio.
I'm having trouble trying to attach the log files to this message. I think I was able to attach a .rar file called logs.rar, but I'm not sure if it got through

Try setting your audio renderer to default, and disable audio types you don't actually need. In fact just for testing, I'd say disable all but AC3.

Amazing. I set audio renderer to default and I can now hear the audio perfectly.
