I've have successfully used NEWA to schedule recordings on the server's NPVR for months.
The server is Win8 64
The client (inside LAN) is Win7 64
I am only interested in streaming LIVE TV. Not interested in streaming anything else.
I'm going to try to get streaming working inside the LAN with an intention of eventually streaming over the internet from outside the LAN.
I'm running stock 3.2.9 NPVR on both the client and the server.

On the Server
  • I downloaded VLC 2.1.5 and installed it on the server.
  • I did not make any other changes to VLC and/or NPVR and/or server.
  • There is no firewall active on the server.
  • On to the client...

ON the Clien
t
  • I point Firefox to 192.168.1.204/8866 (where I have always gone to schedule recordings)
  • I expand Firefox to full screen so I can see the "Config" button.
  • Inside config I adjust the video and audio settings to point to C:\Program Files (x86)\... rather than the default C:\Program Files\...
  • I check open in external player for both video and audio and I specify WMP.
  • I go to the guide and choose a currently-showing program.
  • I choose "Stream Now"
  • The flag comes up stating "*** Starting Stream and then will tranfer window to Streamer page ***".
  • Nothing else ever happens. WMP doesn't open and no stream starts.
  • There is no firewall active on the client

I'm stumped and think I could use some guidance. Other threads seem to point to the same problem I'm having but unfortunately those threads end seemingly without resolution.

I'm one of those who mentioned this issue briefly in a post surrounded by the larger issue of no MP4 sound when using VLC to stream video. The recording does indeed start, but the transfer to the page doesn't happen, same as you.

My work around is to close that window, go to the Manage Recordings tab & start the stream for the active recording from there. If you're streaming from within your LAN, the option of "Live TV" under the channel name/logo should also work, and I've had no problems with that.

I normally use NPVR client/server for streaming inside the LAN and that does work fine. The only purpose to get NEWA to stream is to enable streaming over the internet. But, if I can't get it to stream over the LAN, I've got no chance over the internet.

Is there another NPVR-centric internet streaming option?

I'm currently using WinTV Extend (from Hauppauge) and that works pretty well and that's pretty straight-forward, but I would like to use an NPVR solution if possible. Perhaps Extend is the gold-standard?

There is the option of using XBMC and X-NEWA with VLC transcoding. Here I set it up in web client mode to connect from my place to UJB's over the internet

Martin, that is very cool. I assume you are using XBMC and the NPVR plug-in on your machine and reaching across the internet and accessing UJB's tuners, correct? Very responsive, perhaps even a quicker response than I get when running NPVR on the same machine as the tuners. At least as responsive.

Other than allowing NEWA on the server, specifying the port and then forwarding that port on the router, did UJB do anything else to allow this?
On your machine, did you do anything other than use the NPVR plug-in in XBMC and point it to UJB?

On the server there are some setting to enable remote web access, and you need to change the default PIN for XBMC. You should take whatever network security measure you want.

On the client it is not sub's NextPVR Addon, I showed x-newa and in that video the web client interface. In x-newa it was defaults except for the IP and PIN and the VLC transcoding. There are various quality options usually upload caps will come into play.

So you don't get past the 1st screen that goes to the second screen?

The stream attempt stops with the first screen. I never see that second screen.

Stop the npvr recording service
Clear out your npvr logs folder
Put the attached in the web\app_code directory (it will overlay an existing file)
Start the npvr recording service
From guide2.aspx open a current event to stream
Click on Stream now button
After about 8-10 seconds Stop the npvr recording service
Zip and post your logs

I added logging that tracks the request process we can hopefully see where this is failing on your system..... in the page or in the back-end processing/code

The attached should fix the issue.... it appears it was a chrome issue since everything worked in IE. Probably was failing in FF as well.... but this should fix it.

Same as above....stop the service
Extract the details2.aspx file to web\ and it will overlay the existing file
Restart service
Give it a go.... should work now

Please let me know if it works for you.....
