Hi there,

I use the built in DVD player and I have it set to the LAV decoded but when I play DVDs they come out as PCM stereo and not Dolby 5.1 (when they support it of course). Is this right or do I have some fiddling to do?

how are you outputting your audio and to what device?
If you are outputting via spdif or hdmi to an amp or tv with 5.1 decoding, you can enable passthrough settings within the LAV decoder.
else it you reproduce the behaviour and upload the npvr.log, we (by which I mean someone smarter than me) can see what your audio path looks like.

Hi gEd.

I think I sussed it tonight. I had not realised that LAV had a settings page and on that was tick boxes for types of encoding. Dolby was not ticked so I did so and played a DVD and it worked perfectly :-)

Seems it was user incompetence and not and issues with the DVD player...

Thanks for replying though, I would have found those settings from your answer :-)

pass through is generally better if you have reasonable amp

So I am uploading this via a Radeon graphics card to my soundbar so sounds like passthrough would be good. I can't find that in the options though. I'm using version 0.58.2, is this possibly the issue or am I just missing it?

It's the bitstreaming checkboxes you need to be looking at. Anything checked will be passed to your amp to decode - anything unchecked will be decoded on the PC and sent as PCM to the amp.

Passthough is potentially the best option *if* your soundbar has a 5.1 decoder.
fyi, My Canton soundbase has a 5.1 decoder but only 2.1 speakers and I find speech too quiet on certain 5.1 programmes/movies so I have enabled the mixing option in the LAV decoder to mix the audio down to 2 channel and pushed the centre channel volume level forward.

To access the settings (which I assumed you had already found) you right click on npvr, settings, decoders, then select the small box to the right of where you have enabled the LAV decoder to go into the settings.
you can also enable to tray tool there so you can access the LAV settings from the system tray whilst playing back a recording.
Does this help?

Hi gEd, it does have a dolby decoder.

I can get to the settings but there does not seem to be an option for passthrough, at least nothing that I've found.

Sorry it's called Bitstreaming on the LAV decoder, I couldn't get to the pc earlier to check.
