Hi All,

I needed a Windows Media Server 7 replacement and I found this .... Universal Media Server Version 5.4.0 at http://www.universalmediaserver.com. and it is free Big Grin

The current version is 5.5.0 released 2016-01-05

It allows access to my video library by my Sony KDL-55HX750, WesternDigital TV Live HD Media Player and other PC's on the network.

Note:- I have not tried my Samsung Galaxy S2 Phone or my Samsung Galaxy Tab S (10.5) WiFi as of yet, so I cannot say if it works with them or not.

I have trouble accessing my "Media" PC after I copy video from my "Work" PC via network shares and I forget to reboot the "Media" PC.
UMS will work when I forget to reboot, which makes the wife happy Smile

There is a down side .... It Uses Java

From the website .....
"Universal Media Server is a DLNA-compliant UPnP Media Server.

It was originally based on PS3 Media Server by shagrath.

UMS was started by SubJunk, an official developer of PMS, in order to ensure greater stability and file-compatibility.

Universal Media Server supports all major operating systems, with versions for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

The program streams or transcodes video, audio and image formats with little or no configuration.

It is powered by FFmpeg, MEncoder, tsMuxeR, MediaInfo and more, which combine to offer support for a wide range of media formats."

Mark

I tried Plex ... but I couldn't get it to work as I wanted (I'm a dinosaur) and it wasn't totally free.

All I needed was a structure with all my "Media" PC shared folders that would come up on my Sony TV and WD Live TV so the wife could navigate when my Windows shares were not available.

It does it well ... better than Windows Media Centre (no Genres Actors etc.)

Mark

You just explained plex....and the free version should do what you want. Creates a library out of all your media

The Sony TV should have a plex client, and possibly the WD Live (and any phones/tablets you might have).

Wanting to avoid Plex's model (take profile data unnecessarily then lose it on the internet) I was looking for an alternative.
UMS seems t be working well so far for me.

Having recently moved pvr server to a headless setup I needed a better cserver to get to DLNA clients like all the smart TV's.

(As an aside I use KODI on AndroidTV and NextPVR App on Android which are also great)

Will report back any issues.
