liteswap Wrote:I guess what bugs about those devices is that they seem expensive for what they are. Two tuners, an Ethernet port, a lightweight Linux system to shuttle the bits between the two,and a box to put them in, all for around 200 euros. It should be much cheaper to build one yourself.

in some Point are you right
it is Cheaper if you only must buy an Tv Tuner Card stick, if you must buy an Complete PC Hardware and an Operation System can it be the same

an Software Sat>Ip Server is currently not as COMPLIANT / CERTIFIED tested the most Hardware Sat>Ip Servers are COMPLIANT and CERTIFIED
and for an Sat>Ip Client or Server Dev is it easier to test with Standard COMPLIANT Hardware Server or STB

I'm intrigued to hear if you've been successful in connecting a SatIP box to an NPVR server.

Hi,

I actually took a bit of a break from tinkering with my system, following my last post.

Having done a bit more research I pretty much have come to the conclusion that (as Martin and Liteswap say above) the best choice really should be to the TV tuners in the same box as the Server, wherever possible.

Is a bit of a hassle but I am going to move my satellite dish to the back of the house and then run the five coax leads to a spare room and then buy a much smaller case for my server and mount it on a wall. At least that way, it is guaranteed to work flawlessly with my set up.

I too was very interested in building a Sat>IP myself but I too found that there was no software out there for this dedicated purpose (though I was sure that this must exist).

Thanks for the update. I guess SatIP is a technology whose day has yet to come...

Is TVHeadend not, technically, streaming TV server software?

Would it be possible to run this on a small box, containing all the TV tuners, as a SAT IP Server?

It seems tvheadend has a suitable API to allow NextPVR (or any other app) to access and control its EPG and channel tuning functions, so yes, it should be possible to built your own Sat>IP server that works with it. What I don't know is whether tvheadend complies with Sat>IP standards.

Having spent a couple of minutes googling it - it does sound like TVHeadEnd has some ability to act as a SAT>IP server. If they're entirely compliant, it may just work.

Your further comments have made me perhaps reconsider going down the SAT>IP route after all.

Although I cannot find an off-the-shelf machine that offers 2xDVB-T2 and 4xDVB-S2 tuners, there is no reason why I cannot buy two separate devices like these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Triax-310101-Co...s2+network

https://www.amazon.co.uk/SiliconDust-HDH...-T+network

Cost

The costs of these two off-the shelf devices is going to be about £250.00.

Do you think it would be possible to build anything similar (and completely silent) for around the same? When you factor in the tuners, PSU, case, motherboard, it looks like it might be more expensive to build yourself.

Size

It might be possible to cram everything into a mini-itx case, so I assume that self-built might be potentially smaller.

Electricity

What do you think the running cost would be between the two shop-bought devices in comparison to to something home-built?

Ease of Use

I assume that shopbuilt "might" be more reliable to use and of course will work straight away out of the box.

Other comments

The only other slight downside is that I will lose a precious ethernet connection on my switch by using the two shop-built devices.

Ultimately, if you were me, what would you do?
