Any thought of supporting NAS storage in an upcoming release of NextPVR? I would really love to move my recorded storage to a NAS share. If I can do that, then I can move the entire installation to a device that is dedicated just to the PVR. Right now, I have to use a machine that has other things running on it. I've considered building a new machine just for the PVR, but I really don't want an actual machine, I am considering a mini-pc that has just an internal SSD card and the storage would be on my NAS device.

Thanks

Daryl

Several users already store their recordings on NAS. You should be careful about your setting for deleting/removing recordings from the database if they aren't found (in case the NAS isn't available). You also have to be careful because the NextPVR Recording Service typically runs under the local SYSTEM account not your user account, so drive letters typically won't be mapped to NAS drives and the security settings may be an issue.

You should be able to search on the forums for assistance for both of these issues as well as any other problems you may encounter.

yes, there's nothing needing support here. you can set a unc path for your recording directory. if it doesn't work, it's because you don't have permissions set correctly. by default the NextPVR Recording Service runs on the Local System account, so your NAS share either needs to allow anonymous access, or can change the recording service to run as your normal desktop user. there's also a utility floating around called "ShareHelper" that will do what the name implies.

I remember that now. A year or more ago, when I first stood up NextPVR, I had my temporary drive and recording drive mapped to NAS. I was having difficulties, posted a question here, and it was recommended that I use local drives, not network storage. I guess that since I had everything setup on local drives, I was thinking that was my only option. I reviewed my previous post, and now I remember that using local was the recommended option, but not required.

Thanks for this feedback. I appreciate it.

My memory is starting to come back to me now and I now remember why I kept the recordings on a local drive. There is no way to use UNC path in NextPVR.

I click on "Add" to add in a new recording location, but I can only browse to a location. There is no way to manually add in network location.

When I tried this a year ago, I mapped a drive to my machine and added that, but NextPVR could not use it. Sub told me it was because NextPVR runs as another user, not the one that I'm logged in as, and because of that, it could not access the share.

Any additional idea's?

Thank you

Manually updating config.xml works.

I would offer that any location you can't browse to probably isn't working correctly; that's the exact reason it doesn't allow manual entry, to avoid people hand-entering an invalid location. However, as martin says, if you really want to you can edit config.xml directly.

Given the list is not with at local system permissions that isn't true. Also for me anyway the microsoft hostnamed shares are not always available at recording time the IP address notation is.

Likewise the hostnamed shares often take a long time for me to become available (if at all!) I only used IP addressing now.

Thanks for the reply's.

I made a change on my machine, and now I can browse to the network share. Honestly, I'm not sure which change did it. It just suddenly started working. Perhaps just took some time to be discoverable.

The share is a PUBLIC share, so it is accessible by all, however, NextPVR still cannot write the temp file to the temporary location. I remember in my original posting Sub said that NextPVR runs under a different user, not the user that I'm logged in as. Do I have to create a special user on the NAS so NextPVR can access the share? I tried creating an anonymous user, but the NAS told me it was reserved and wouldn't let me create it.

Suggestions?

Thank you.
