Time for a new machine

Hi All,

I am thinking about making a new DVR. I call mine Divo. It’s been 10 years and I am thinking either a top of the line new NUC mini or a Mac mini 2018. I am leaning towards the NUC for cost, but also wanted to ask if Optane would help NPVR or is it not worth it? Thanks!

Not able to offer advice, but I'm in the market for a new PC too, mine is HTPC/Desktop/Everything ...but it's 2007 motherboard and CPU, albeit with RAM, SSD, Video Card upgrades over the years. NUC's look interesting as a NPVR server, but I'd need a Box for video editing anyway. My problem is I have locked myself into a PCI Colossus and the NUC cannot accommodate that. I also have PCI tuners as well as USB based ones.

Thanks. I use the Himerun Prime for tuners, but I use mine as a stand alone. My NPVR gets slow and it crashes occasionally because I believe my processor is over heating. It’s 10 years old and on for most of the day, through winter heat and summer cold. I am in a small apartment so I wish there was a great computer like the old ASUS pundit, but I old want the latest tech so it will last. IE USB 3.2 and/C external ports and Bluetooth 5.0 are the last major jumps.

I am thinking about making a new DVR.

NextPVR places very little load on a device when it is recording. Simply stated, NextPVR copies the stream from a digital tuner to a recording file ... there is very little processing required.

Typically, playback also requires little from the processor .... most playback function is done in the graphics hardware and any graphics sold in the last five years or more should support 1080 HD without difficulty. Transcoding the stream for Android and other clients places a load on the NextPVR server machine.

You can probably get a feel for the load if you run a test with simultaneous recordings and simultaneous playback to clients and watch the load using Task Manager or Resource Monitor.

Regarding Optane I build a new machine and opted for NVMe SSD because it is so much faster than SSD. Optane won't help NextPVR at all the files are too big for caching.

I just built 2 about 8 months apart and also used NVMe and though I've used SSD's in the past, the difference is pretty amazing! I use one mostly as my DVR/Video machine and the other for work at home and home office. About $1200 each which I could have cut down even more but I like em big.
I use 2 Primes but might be cutting the cord at the end of the year depending on data caps my ISP has. NVPR is used around the house and all my videos and tv goes to a Synology NAS except the NPVR recorded shows which reside on the newer, PC.
NVPR is just too good, too easy and never lets me down.
