EPG Language Selection in V5

I did some checking and the issue does not appear to be pvr.nextpvr or NextPVR. For my test I used the "women" character and I see NextPVR sends 女 as UTF-8 U+5973 (E5 A5 B3) and the database stores the same 3 bytes. I have identified this to see if anyone can help advance it.

Thank you for the very quick reply. I like to shed more light on this. I found that NextPVR client also shows square blocks in place of Chinese characters. Here is screenshot:



Regarding use of Chinese characters in Programme Info (even when set to English), NextPVR web client still shows Chinese characters whereas MediaPortal correctly shows nothing (because there are no English Programme Data for this particular TV Show). See the following screenshots:

NextPVR's language preference settings are about your preferred language if there are multiple available - if there isn't, then you get whatever is available.

I'm aware of some situations where this can happen - it relates to the new Skia based text rendering introduced a couple of releases back (to replace the now defunct system.drawing equivalent). It basically does this if the default font for the skin ("San Droid") doesn't contain glyphs for these characters. System.drawing was more forgiving in the past, and would fall back to glyphs from the system font.

Thanks for explanation. I would prefer NextPVR to show nothing in the Programme Info rather than show the programme info in Chinese language. After all, my setting was to show English rather than show Default. Is this currently available or will I have to just accept the Default (in the event of my chosen selection not being available)?

It's probably only possibly to do that for description. You couldn't do it for show title, since it's gonna have to have a show title - it can't just stay empty if there is no english title.

Yes, totally understand. The programme info should be from the English "track" if the user selects English. If there's no data, then so be it. The show title may not be selectable, like you suggest. In my profession, I also work with media files and have a deep understanding of subtitles and it's a similar scenario, whereby, if somebody selected a subtitle track which contained no data, we just show no data, rather than reverting to the default.

Sub's reply got me thinking and sure enough if you change the font in the Kodi skin to Arial you get the Chinese words too.  IMO that is preferable to not showing anything.

I think that is a lot less clear cut in Europe, where it is common for the user to be multi-lingual. For example, a user might prefer a French description of the show, but they'd happily take an English description (over nothing) if that is all that is available.
