Completely wiped a PC and installed windows 10, latest build, latest patches

Installed the latest drivers from the Hauppauge website

Installed NextPVR v5.  Does not detect it

Attempted to uninstall from Add/Remove.  Uninstaller blows up without uninstalling

Ran the NextPVRuninstaller.  Program crashes after deleting the files in the directory and does NOT remove the
service.

Installed NextPVR 4.  Detects the 950 with no problem

Does anyone know the magic incantations needed to get NextPVR 5 to detect the TV tuner hardware?  And the
failure to uninstall is not cool at all.

Run sc delete "NextPVR service" not sure why the uninstaller didn't do that your service may have been in a bad state.

Add/Remove /Reinstall is definitely a bad approach to fixing problems with NextPVR though not sure why users try this so often.

Anyway try the install again but this time send the zipped NextPVR logs.

I was not trying to uninstall it to fix it.  I was trying to uninstall it to GET RID OF IT.  I come from the "fool me once, shame on you" software school.  I gave the program a perfect platform, no other programs installed, not even antivirus, fresh windows installation, basically the equivalent of a shiny brand new house, with all the utilities ready to rock and roll.  And the program came in and cr apped all over the place, dumping registry changes God-knows-where and refusing to leave when asked.  Reinstall it?  Are you frigging insane?  It got it's chance.  It screwed it up.  It's gone.  If it's developers have any pride in it they will setup a test set and figure out why it won't uninstall, and fix that.  Then as Hauppauge is the largest maker of tv capture hardware out there they will figure out why it's ignoring the hardware yet the predecessor program is not.   When you create a new version of a software program it's considered bad form to break the support for earlier hardware.

As it is now I'll have to nuke and repave the machine and reinstall everything and put the version 4 program on there since I know it works because I can't trust anything on the machine now.

It's kind of a shame because the feature set for the new software looked really nice.  But it's clearly not ready if it won't even uninstall.  That is about the most criminal thing a program can do, is install then fail to uninstall when commanded to do so.

Are both the installer and uninstaller in need of work, perhaps. They are relatively new in the year+ development of NextPVR but your comments are totally unfounded. They will evolve and improve like everything else. It is not developers it is one developer sub and I know he takes great pride in his work be he depends on the community to report isses. Sub worked for Hauppauge wrote WinTV, V4 and V5 and if anyone could help with this simple problem he can.

If you had chosen to continue to do normal triage and post logs like most users instead of being an asshole you might even have a working system now. Instead you are stuck on v4.

Calm down buddy Big Grin

As mentioned above, this is a one man project, which I do in my spare time as a hobby. The software is pretty good, and I go out of my way to try fixing any bugs found. You'd be much better off trying to report any bugs you find, so that its fixed for you, and anyone else that may otherwise encounter the same thing in the future.

If you were wanting to post a screenshot of error you get from the uninstaller, I'll fix the issue, and give you an updated uninstaller. I can only fix these things if people tell me what isn't working for them.

If you were want to manually uninstall, it's pretty straight forward.

Remove the service by running sc delete "NextPVR service" from a command prompt running as administrator/

The app creates 1 registry setting, which you can easily remove.

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NPVR\V5_InstallDir

If you're manually removing the files, you can delete two directories:
Code:
C:\Program Files\NextPVR
C:\Users\Public\NPVR-data

All done...clean machine again....

I actually worked for Hauppauge for 7 years. I use their hardware every day for my testing.

If you want to post a set of logs, or the description of your HVR-950 problem, I'm happy to look into the issue.

Calm down, and speak respectfully, and we'll help you with any problems you're having.

OK, I apologize, it was late and I was tired. As IT essential service personnel, I'm forbidden to go out of the house and I'm climbing the walls. I actually cleaned the lawnmower carburetor today that's how bored I am.

version 4 uninstalled no problem

service removed

registry key deleted

directories listed deleted PLUS I removed
C:\Users\Public\NPVR
which must have been installed by version 4

machine restarted (Dell Optiplex 9020 core i5 8GB ram)

NPVR version 4 installed msvc redistributable 2017 I left this

NPVRSetup run

Program installs properly and starts up the interface

NOW the tuners show up. (just the digital ones of course. I haven't installed the analog tuner software from Hauppauge)

Attempted to uninstall from Programs and Features

Error message briefly popped up on screen:

11] ServiceLocatorThread() Hostname: TV-PC
[11] address: 192.168.1.200
[10] Requesting wake up for 'EPG-UPDATE' [EPG Update] at 4/6/2020 2:44 AM

at System.Net.Sockets.UdpClient..ctor(Int32 port, AddressFamily family)
at NShared.LocatorService.LocatorThread()
[9] RecordingService starting...
[9] Doing database vacuum

Program entry not deleted from add-remove programs.

Shut down tray icon
shut down service

ran uninstall from add-remove program again. No error message this time. Asks for Cntl-C to shut down. Did that, window disappears

Service still in services
program still listed in add-remove programs

I manually deleted c:\program files\nextpvr

Ran uninstall again from add-remove program
gave an error message about not finding the uninstall program offered to delete from Installed Programs
accepted that, deleted the entry

Deleted the data directory in public and the registry key, and the service with sc, restarted the computer
Note sc must be run from cmd that was run as adminstrator

Reinstalled version 5.

Summary:

1) The installer for v5 fails to check for MSC redistributable and install it if not present (I ASSUME that was the trouble) Remember a fresh install of win 10 DOES NOT have any redistributables.
2) Uninstaller fails to kill tray icon process and service before attempting to uninstall them
3) Uninstaller fails to remove itself from the Programs & Features listing and fails to delete the uninstall script from the programs directory (if it did, a second invocation of the uninstaller would make windows offer the user to delete the entry and most people wouldn't care)

I do not know if the C++ dlls missing were the problem with it not being able to find the tuner OR if version 4 left something behind that version 5 is now using

Now that it's running I'll check it out. I'm only going to be using this machine to watch OTA ATSC tv and we'll see how well the OTA EPG program guide works. This area has all encrypted cable and only ATSC digital in OTA. Most of our TV watching is Disney Plus and CBS All Access as well as the free stuff but occasionally there's a decent show worth watching OTA

OK another check with this installer:

4) Installer fails to install MSVC x86 2010 redistributable which is required by the desktop app. Running the desktop app gives a Cannot load file or assembly SlimDX
This is documented already here:
https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.ph...#pid534416

Installing this does allow the desktop app to start HOWEVER when going to Live TV the desktop app errors with "Unable to find available capture device"
The desktop app DOES display the EPG program guide that was downloaded OTA, however

The Android app Kodi with the NextPVR plugin DOES properly access the NextPVR server as does the web browser interface.

No need it isn't supported in v5. Analog support via an extra is possible but it takes patience and probably not worth doing.

OK more data,

Installing MSCV x86 2010 redistributable completely screws up the main NextPVR server program, that is why the desktop program keeps saying it can't find an available capture device, because the server keeps crashing.

Uninstalling MSCV x86 2010 redistributable then restarting the PC gets back normal behavior on the server but now the desktop app is back to crashing with the unable to load SlimDX.dll

There is also another problem with the web interface. That is, the web interface apparently needs to authenticate into the server (it asks for the userID and password) to do anything - to watch TV to look at the guide, etc. However, much of the time the web interface fails to ask for authentication. So if I click around at enough menu items I'll stumble over one that forces the web interface to ask for authentication and then once I authenticate in - everything works. But if I can't get it to ask for authentication, then things won't work on the web interface.

Tis is on the Edge browser.
