Hi Guys,
I've been using TVHEADEND on Ubuntu 20.10 connected to a separate Kodi client also on Ubuntu 20.10.  When first done for 20.04, this were quite nice, but since updating to 20.10 the streaming video had some issues that I cant crack.  So I thought I'd try NextPVR...
I installed with the helper ".deb" and things install, the web page works, it finds my tuners (a few Hauppage cards) and even get the EPG.  But it wont play a video or record with the error suggesting it doesnt have access to the correct folders.  I've seen this type of issue before on ubuntu, they are more strict than many linux systems.  Can someone help this newbie get the folder permissions correct...

How do identify which user is running the nextpvr?

Thanks
C

Hi Martin,
Thank you for the very prompt reply.  I'm a bit embarrassed, I read that and missed the user details and folder changes, I think I thought it was for a manual install. Sorry.

Anyway, got the access sorted, so I can record from the browser.  Firefox is stopping playback, but thats not important for the server.  I can watch the recording from Kodi (different device), but the livestreams arent working there yet, nor does it record the TS stream when a recording is started from there.  So I have some more work to do (but that might be from the Kodi forums)

Thanks again!

The typical reason for not being able to recording is Kodi Leia isn't aware of EPG updates. For LiveTV check the Live TV folder permissions too.

Seems a little more complicated than that... I'm getting it to work inconsistently. Sometimes a server restart helps, sometimes is doesnt. When looking to solve the first thing I overlooked I read on the forum of someone having similar issues, so I'll need to go back and find that to see what you did for it. That said, briefly:
Server: Ubuntu 20.10, with 3 Hauppauge cards (all different), older i7, 12Gb Ram and Nvidia Graphics card. It has a few webservers running (filerun, apache, squeezebox, and nextpvr).
clients: Localhost via web browser ; win10 via web browser and VLC ; unbuntu 20.10 via kodi and nextpvr plug in

I'll play a bit more and maybe come back with a log (the zip file via the web server). I did look at one already and it didnt make much sense to me, so if it gets to that I'll definitely have to reach out for help!

thx,
C

It could simply be signal strength if you have splits to all those cards. Drop the splits and start with one

its possible, but the TV tuner hardware was running for a few years with a different pc (same location and splits) as a mediaportal server (on win7). I upgraded the box and switched to ubuntu 20.04 (tvheadend to kodi) instead of win10 and things were working well, then I updated Ubuntu to 20.10. At this stage it got worse, the streams would start ok and then degrade (some channels more than others and sometime it would take hours, other times minutes) and a restart of the stream would usually fix it. I tried reducing the cards, different combinations of the cards, and codecs on both the clients and server all with not real luck. This has become very tiresome, so thought I'd try nextpvr...

Can I find signal strength easily somewhere in this system? (either Ubuntu or nextpvr). In the logs I did some of this data in hex, but wasnt sure what it meant.

I tried to watch again and it failed from both kodi and a web page. Logs attached.

There is a lot of evidence there is a bug if you select copy rather scanning digital device on linux. Check to see if you have

/var/opt/nextpvr/adapter1-DVB-T-channels.conf
/var/opt/nextpvr/adapter2-DVB-T-channels.conf
/var/opt/nextpvr/adapter3-DVB-T-channels.conf
/var/opt/nextpvr/adapter4-DVB-T-channels.conf

If you don't you can scan each adapter or you can try copy adapter0 to these file name.

Good pick up, they were missing, so I have created them and changed ownership/group to nextpvr (see screenshot).
I played a little bit and the faults are now a little different, thing often just stop on "starting device: please wait.." and got the errors listed in the second screen shot under the 'status' check.
I'll clear the logs and run a better test later today.
thanks again for your help.
