Well, its done.  I have officially dropped my cable subscription and shutdown NPVR.  Not that I wanted to, but Cox forced me into it.  I'm not sure what I'll turn to just yet, I don't really like any of my options, but I just know that how I had been doing things is no longer an option.

Thank you Sub for NextPVR.  I really liked using it.  Great product.  Best of luck to you and all the others that make this product what it is.

I was in the same situation a year ago when Cox forced the change to the new set top box and I could no longer capture broadcasts with my Hauppague Colossus. I bought an HDHomerun Quatro to receive programming through the antenna I already had in the attic. Also subscribed to YoutubeTV. Luckily NextPVR 5 had just come out of beta with a Linux version and everything has been working well ever since. I'm glad to finally be rid of Cox.

As people leave cable I did find that I was able to buy STB's and HDPVR's dirt cheap to record all channels. We never had cable card here in Canada and we don't have Channels DVR.

Daryl: Remind me where you live, please. For broadcast TV, if you live in a area served by Locast, that could be a great option for you with NPVR--you don't even need a tuner or antenna. If you're looking for non-premium (i.e. not HBO, Cinemax, etc.) cable networks, it's going to be more difficult without any cable subscription in the US. But there might be some options there. Maybe let us know which cable network(s) you're most interested in. Also, I'm guessing that Cox's retention department will be contacting you. If you can get a deal from them for simple service that includes legitimate streaming for cable networks, then Channels DVR's TV Everywhere my be an option for you and, as pskout has said, it can even be used as a "tuner" into NextPVR, too.

It does appear that Cox cable made some big mistakes and pissed lots of people off by DRMing all but local channels. However, I'm reading that across the US, they have either had a change of heart or, they didn't know the upgrade would cause this problem and copy protection is being removed.  Some areas may not see this happen since they've been DRM'd long ago but little by little, I am seeing my channels being reverted.
All of this will probably be moot in another year or maybe less since it's just what's happening with cable cards and cable companies.

It seems that now that Fox Sports International is owned by Disney instead of Fox, new Fox channels are not copy protected. They have new HD extra BTN channels and FS2 that are recordable with CableCard. So, do I contact Verizon and ask them if they can unprotect the existing Fox owned channels, like NatGeo, FX, FXX, etc? It would be great to more easily record those, but I worry that they would instead copy protect the new ones.
Tuners: SD HDHR Prime (HDHR3-CC). SD HDHR Connect Quatro Tuner (HDHR5-4US) - only QAM.  URayCoder H.264 - capturing cable box.
Client: Odroid-N2 running knewc on KODI - connected via MoCA.

If you send me a PM with the letter you're thinking of writing to Verizon, I'd love to send it to Verizon also.
