I guess the real question is if you want AC3 5:1 or not. With PCM you get 2 channel with not delays but if you want 5:1 you have to mess around with the timing.

Mvallevand mess with timing is not going to help this one bit, the problem with AC3 is it can auto switch from one format to another on the fly and not in just speaker count which all of the HD-PVR can not seem to deal with on reg TV broadcast show/movie with commercial ads how ever this not a problem with premiere channel like HBO or Showtime which run non stop movie in audio format or recording from a PC and doesn't matter if it from HDMI or Toslink, that why you end up with off wall audio problem.

If the STB is stupid enough to change the audio decoded output that will be real problem, syncing AC3 can cause enormous delays on any receiver. Sure OTA that happens but these are supposed to be decoded in the STB before going to the audio out.

The issue that the HDPVR has is changing resolutions with AC3 decoding turned on. If a user has the blaster timed to ensure that the signal change is clean I typically wouldn't expect problems.

Did you forgot I been doing this for very long time, And that not in the STB output and Hardware Engineers at Hauppauge found that it was in incoming signal that is being transmitted which pass over to the Toslink or HDMI bitstream.

Not even using a fix resolution will do any good but it dose help to used a fix resolution because the consumer hardware encoder where not design to handle that on the fly only a decoder where, I should know I had both Dish and DirecTV even additional service like Time Warner and CableONE on top Satellite as well as OTA service.

Respectfully I have been doing this for a while too https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.ph...ight=hdpvr

I am confident in saying that Hauppauge did not tell you as a general rule that recording with AC3 is bad and to only use AAC. There is certainly an issue when it drops audio with component or HDMI but my experience is it only drops when it is being tuned.

Ok but I still had beta samples hardware all most 2 year prior to you see photo I was allow to photo on 4/4/2008 under news and I even done review 9/29/2008 and I help get AC3 off the ground with the first Gen HD-PVR as min other hardware feel free to look for your self right here at Wayback Machine (archive.org).
That not true it really depend the source material but general rule that if recording with AC3 was coming out with audio sync problem was to use AAC in it place along with fix resolution I even posted this on shspvr forum.
