Hi all

I currently use tvheadend on linux with HDHomeRun network tuners. However I would like to switch to Windows.

I really like NextPVR but there is one feature missing that I used in tvheadend - support for multiple users with completely separate recording directories.

I suspect it would be a lot of effort to implement the same feature in NextPVR but I was wondering whether it's possible to run two instances of NextPVR v5 on the same machine running on different ports? I think this would allow me to achieve the same result.

I have seen posts about running v4 and v5 on the same server but I haven't seen anyone talk about 2 instances of v5 (hopefully I haven't missed it!). I suspect it might work in the same way although I'm not sure if I would be able to set up two services without changes to the code? Perhaps I could just start the second instance from a script?

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Many thanks
AJD

I could be done but it would be very manual and undocumented. Only one instance could run as a service , the other could be a scheduled task (which is what I use anyway). You'd need to run on different ports and you'd need to use environment variables to find the data folder. There would also be a conflict for the registry and using the Windows client NextPVR.exe so you'd likely need Kodi for at least one instance. You'd need figure out how to manage the tuner as well.

Kodi can be configured to have users so you could use the same Kodi to access these instances.

Alternatively you could also run NextPVR on your Linux box or run Docker on Windows. NextPVR does work from WSL2 native too.

Thanks Martin

I forgot to mention that I'm using Kodi as the client - so each of those could be set to different ports.

I thought the tuner might just work - each instance would check if a tuner was in use and move to the next one if it was? Perhaps? I'm not really sure.

But yeah - the registry conflict might be difficult to get around. It may be easier to set up a separate machine.

Cheers

The registry issue is mainly NextPVR client.  Regardless of where the server runs tuner management is an issue.

If they don't need live TV you could just isolate their recordings in Kodi

Hmm - yeah I could isolate their recordings. But I'd like each user to have full functionality - to schedule recordings etc. etc. But still only see their own stuff.

I'll have a closer look when I get a chance and see if I can work anything out.
