I'm testing on a Roku Streaming Stick 3600X
Roku Software version 10.0.0 build 4195-24
NextPVR UI Version 1.11 build 10

I already know that this Roku model cannot decode AC3. I don't know about its video format support situation, but I was able to play a NextPVR TV recording (without audio, of course, as I'm not hooked up to a digital audio decoding receiver).

However, when I go to Live TV, I get:

Starting Device. Please Wait...
Receiving Data ([various increasing numbers])
Streaming Failed (transcoder exited)
-2 The connection timed out.

I know the problem isn't my NextPVR server, as NextPVR Live TV playback is working just fine on my Fire TV Stick 4K within the NextPVR Kodi add-on.

You will need the zipped NextPVR logs.

You are getting recent the node-set error. Could you see if this helps https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.ph...#pid557282

If that doesn't help I'd turn off h/w decoding since it it failing (perhaps a permissions issue)

Nope, but your diagnosis can't be far off, because I had been noticing that channels on Kodi on the Fire TV Stick were taking a long time to load.

I replaced the dll, restarted the system, tried the Roku again, got the same error. Tried on Kodi on the Fire TV Stick, and the channel took about 25 to 30 seconds to load.

Here's an updated log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/fms9dmkji46xdm...9.zip?dl=0

Edit: I haven't touched h/w decoding yet. I will try that.

You didn't replace NShared.dll properly you still have the node-set error. You need to stop the service and the tray app first.

Sorry, while I'm stopping the service and tray app each time, I noticed that there are two NShared.dlls, one in C:\Program Files\NextPVR\client, which I'd replaced, and one in C:\Program Files\NextPVR, which I'd *not* replaced.

It looks like I should *not* touch the one in the client folder, as that breaks the NextPVR.exe client from running (not that I'm using it).

I should *just* replace in C:\Program Files\NextPVR.

Okay, now that I've done that:

I still get the same error on the Roku, but Kodi is worse, getting "Playback failed" the first time I try to load a channel.

Next thing to try is "turn off h/w decoding". Are you talking about Settings->Transcoder->Video Encoder?

Mine has been set to "AMD".

"Recording Auto Transcode" is set to "Leave recordings in native format".

I just tried changing it to "CPU", and it seems like it shortens the channel load time in Kodi to only about six seconds, which is a lot better, but it doesn't fix the error on the Roku.

"D3D11VA" also doesn't fix the error on the Roku.

FYI, I just tried installing the latest LAV codecs and restarted the system, so those should be up to date now, but this did not fix the error on the Roku.

Here is a new log zip: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xp96drofykjnor...1.zip?dl=0

Btw, I'm using the following NextPVR defaults in the config file:

  <Decoders>

    <DecoderH264>Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder</DecoderH264>

    <DecoderHEVC>LAV Video Decoder</DecoderHEVC>

    <DecoderMPEG2>LAV Video Decoder</DecoderMPEG2>

    <OnlyIncludeMappedAudioDecodersForTS>true</OnlyIncludeMappedAudioDecodersForTS>

    <DecoderAC3>LAV Audio Decoder</DecoderAC3>

    <DecoderEAC3>LAV Audio Decoder</DecoderEAC3>

    <DecoderAAC>Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder</DecoderAAC>

    <DecoderHEAAC>LAV Audio Decoder</DecoderHEAAC>

    <DecoderMPEG1Layer2>LAV Audio Decoder</DecoderMPEG1Layer2>

    <DVDDecoderMPEG2>LAV Video Decoder</DVDDecoderMPEG2>

    <DVDDecoderAC3>Disabled</DVDDecoderAC3>

    <DVDDecoderMPEG1Layer2>Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder</DVDDecoderMPEG1Layer2>
  </Decoders>

You must have a very low end PC because it can't transcode well at all.  As a result you can' even use NextPVR web app.

Unfortunately sub hasn't provided an audio only option for the Roku or devices that aren't web based but I can give you settings to fix the audio if you are interested.

Kodi doesn't need this it is totally different.

Oh, no worries, I see that now, based on the web app output (I never used the web app): "Server is not fast enough for playback in a web browser. (0.354x)"

I just donated, thanks for your help over the last six months.

Yeah, it's an AMD E-350 APU-based netbook that I use as a file server, to record, and to timeshift. It's 10 years old with 6 GB of RAM and an SSD, with external USB drives for storage, but obviously not powerful enough to transcode on the fly -- only good to record, serve up files, and stream without transcoding. Sorry, I just didn't realize that the Roku implementation required transcoding. I guess I'll just stick to using Kodi, then.

Regarding Kodi and NShared.dll, just to provide more context after further testing, I noticed that I get that time out on the first load of a channel (i.e. "Playback failed" in Kodi) if I also have TightVNC Viewer viewing the netbook desktop at the same time; so, on a low-end machine, there definitely seems to be a latency situation with more than one app using Ethernet/CPU that will cause it to time out. With TightVNC Viewer closed, on the other hand, the channel loads in about six seconds, which is acceptable.

If you edit config.xml and change

Code:
<TranscodeHLS>default</TranscodeHLS>

to

<TranscodeHLS>-y [ANALYZE_DURATION] [SEEK] -i [SOURCE] -map_metadata -1 -threads [THREADS] -ignore_unknown -map 0:v:0? [PREFERRED_LANGUAGE] -map 0:a:[AUDIO_STREAM] -map -0:s -vcodec copy -acodec aac -ac 2 -c:s copy -hls_time [SEGMENT_DURATION] -start_number 0 -hls_list_size [SEGMENT_COUNT] -y [TARGET]</TranscodeHLS>

You should be ok on the Roku with Direct Play turned off. You can do this without restarting.

You can follow this thread for recordings. https://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?tid=62473

Both these options are audio only transcoding so they shouldn't cause cause much performance hit.
