Hi, sorry Im new to the forum

Where can I find info on parts for building a server?

The min spec details are super vague. I found a post from years ago that says storage io is more important that gfx or cpu power.

Is there any updated info on this somewhere?

I want to build a box just for running this via W10 for streaming and recording freeview (4 tuner card already have). Not for gaming, not for watching content on. Would an APU be enough?
I have lots of spare older parts, but have the budget to buy new. I am an experienced self builder, but want it to be as low power and quiet as I can get away with.

Im sure this has been asked before, just looking for someone to point me where to look

Thanks

Although you are not going to watching content on the PC you need to decide how you are going to watch. If the browser client is preferred you will need a h/w transcoding, Windows or Linux.

If you don't use the web player the client that needs the power and good de-interlacing. Pretty much all cards even integrated graphics for a PC offer that. You can also use RPi, Android, Apple and Roku clients so technically the client doesn't have to be a PC.

Thanks for the reply. I didnt realise it mattered, but Im planning to use the Kodi plugin. Atm it would be mainly viewed on another W10 PC running Kodi, but eventually I might use it on a smart TV. Currently my TV is not smart.

Ive seen seperate gfx cards recommend often in messages, but the threads I could find were really old. GTX 210 was recommended twice.

I have a spare GTX970 but I dont want to be running that 24/7 and I dont want to pay the earth for a new modern low tier gfx card. I have loads of much older gfx cards lying around, but I was thinking maybe buying a new AMD 5600G or getting hold of a older second hand intel or AMD APU might do?

There is a NextPVR/Kodi build video on YT using an AMD 3600 and GTX1650, do I really need a spec that high to stream freeview?  I probably wont be streaming more than 2 streams at once, 4 tuners is mainly because we end up recording a lot of stuff to watch later. Im currently using media centre, have been since 2008 - time for a change.

I would like it to be low power use and quiet since it will be on 24/7. My current HTPC spends most of its life in sleep mode and consumes very little (uses integrated gfx).

Is this the right part of the forum to be looking for this info?

No. Since you're going to watching in Kodi, the specifications for the nextpvr acting as a simple streaming/recording server are very low.

Pick up Intel Core i3 9000 or new series and no GPU is needed you can make used of intel quick sync in NextPVR and I think it even works under Linux, Note: Just stay away from the much cheaper Core i3 xxxxF series they have no iGPU on board.

Thanks shspvr, that parts list is really useful to see.

P101 case looks good, may add that to my short list.

IMO silent cases are ancient requirements from when people used HTPC's. Now it doesn't make sense to put an ugly server near the TV.

That is what I was getting sy, you often pay a premium for the silent cases and fans that might not be necessary in a server like setting.
