AppleTV4 + Stuttering / No Audio

Howdy all!

I'm a newcomer to NextPVR, and so far have been impressed.

I have two AppleTV4 - one is a 4K, the other is a the first gen AppleTV4.

I'm trying to setup streaming for NZ Television (streams courtesy of https://www.matthuisman.nz) - however, I have the following problems:

TVNZ1, TVNZ2 + Prime all will play for about 15 seconds, then freeze, then play, then freeze.  Playing from a Windows PC, these playback fine.  Same thing happens if I record TV, then try a playback.

Also, Al Jazeera looses it's audio.

I've tried all manner of settings, but nothing seems to improve the feeds.  (It *seems* to be related to when the stream is in HD or FHD, 576i seems to be fine, which a lot of the other channels are).

What I have got going is to setup nextpvr to talk to a tvheadend server, with that tvheadend server being set to perform transcoding on the fly - that seems to work.

Unchecking the box to "prefer direct stream" to try and force transcoding doesn't appear to work.

Has anyone else seen this?  Perhaps it's a "feature" of tvOS15?  (Both units are on the latest tvOS).

I have these problems if nextpvr is configured to deliver the streams directly.

It seems that using android (phone) or windows via Firefox, everything seems to run reasonably well.

If I use tvheadend and connect directly from apple tv, then things seem to be more stable.  If I get nextpvr to get the streams from tvheadend, then it's better, but still not working as best it could.

This is running off an i5 w/ 16 GB of ram (4th gen, I think), it will allow VAAPI - which helps considerably watching on the computer, but doesn't make any difference to the AppleTV.

I did have this running on an i7 with 32 gb of ram, and that didn't seem to help.

I'm starting to think I might need to get an android tv box or 2 :-)

Is the AppleTV connected via wifi or wired? I'm wondering if it's just a of the network not keeping up on the HD streams.

You definitely don't want to be doing that. Ultimately you'll end up with a setup with twice as many places where things can go wrong.

So VAAPI only comes into play when you're transcoding video, like to view in the web app etc. With the AppleTV it's playing the native stream, with no transcoding required.

Can you try deleting the IPTV device, by hold the Ctrl key on the Settings->Devices page, and clicking the 'delete' button, then try importing a new IPTV device with these urls:

TVNZ1, TVNZ2, Prime all have multiple streams available, and it's defaulting to the highest quality/bitrate version. With the m3u url above, it'll force it pick a lower bitrate stream. This may help if either wifi (to the ATV) or your internet connection(to the source) isn't managing to keep up.
