I've been using NPVR for many years (thank you!) and in particular in the past couple of years I have been successfully watching a long (100min) TV show each day while it airs, but starting late, by playing a recording that NPVR is doing. This means I can then (manually) skip the ad breaks and gradually catch up to live during the airing.

However, since I upgraded to version 6.0.0 (220904), this scenario is proving almost impossible. It seems like there might be a bug in the Windows NextPVR.exe client application which breaks the progress bar and the ability to skip through the TV show accurately, if the show is still recording when you start watching it.

Skipping forward by 1min or 10sec (or whatever the ⏩⏭️ buttons should be doing) instead jumps forward by a seemingly random and large amount, often going right to the end of the current recording and stopping playback.

From what I have figured out over a few weeks of this, I think the problem arises when you try to skip past the point the recording had reached when you started playing it. For instance, if the show started recording at 12.30 and I started watching it at 13.00, I could skip ahead past a 12.45 ad break without any trouble, but trying to skip ahead past a 13.05 ad break would see the skip button leap straight to the end of the current recording, or at least substantially towards it.

Similarly, you can normally click around in the green progress bar at the bottom to jump to a particular time, but this is also not working properly at all in this scenario (watching while recording). Clicking it does skip but it could be in either direction, to any position on the bar, and again may make the playback stop if it goes to the end. I haven't managed to work out what's going on with this but I think it is related to the timing issue implied by the skip buttons problem.

As I say I think this was introduced in version 6.0.0 (220904) so if you are able to resolve it in a future release that would be great. I'd be happy to help diagnose further if I can. The show I'm recording is in HD on a UK channel if that is relevant.

Thanks very much!

It would be helpful to provide logs of the skipping failure.

Watching an in progress recording in most UI clients also fail for me.  In nlite it is worse as it can hang.  Hopefully sub can fix this as it makes watching sports recording difficult

My work around for sports I want to watch, even though I'm also recording the program, is to start live TV and pause it. I start watching about an hour in and can rewind/skip ahead correctly.
The recording is my backup plan in case something goes wrong during the live TV or I have to stop watching for some reason.

I think the attached file is the log from today's session watching this show while it was still recording, if it's any help. The show started recording at 12.30 but today I didn't start watching until about 13.15. The log will have a lot of skipping around in it, using both the skip buttons and the progress bar, as I tried and failed to find the right place. Of course the problem only showed up once I was past about 45 minutes into the recording. The log might not be that easy to follow - might be easier to reproduce the issue I guess. Thanks very much!

Edit: the attached file disappeared when I posted. Have shared from OneDrive instead:

The Kodi client still can do in-progress since it isn't using the NextPVR style.  Because of ths issues I started using a uidroid box that dual boots Android/CoreElec so it is easy to switch over.  I used to use Kodi 100% then uidroid 100% now for sports in progress I used Kodi again.

I also have a workaround which is to stop playing the programme, then hit resume, then do the skipping (because the problem doesn't apply to parts of the recording that exist when playback begins).

That said, I'm really hoping this can be fixed because I was skipping through still-recording programmes without any problems at all until this latest release.

Thanks! Smile

I can confirm the same issue, and like Martin, it actually locked up on me when trying to forward manually. I could exit and then resume, but it generally would resume at a place far ahead of where I wanted to go.

I am running the latest V6 (as of last week, not sitting at the device), Tablo 2-tuner antenna, Windows 10, Roku TV connected with HDMI cable. Comskip is running as a parallel process. Note though that after the recording was complete I could skip anywhere. During recording, I could sometimes skip forward, but often it hung. When it did successfully skip forward, it usually took 3-5 seconds t start playing again. After recording was done, skipping was instant.

I see someone already provided logs. However, if an additional set of logs would help I will work on duplicating the problem and get some logs.

I upgraded to Tablo and V6 in setting up at a new house. Previously V4, and skipping during recording was not an issue.

Thanks
Chuck

Until sub has time the only solution for playing in-progress recordings reliably is to use Kodi as noted above.
