Doing my due diligence I noticed NextPVR is proprietary software owned by one person.  What happens to the software if something happens to that person? (Like they step in front of a bus)  Do they have a Digital Inheritance/Continuity plan in place?

I ask this as I just experienced this..  I needed to upgrade a device from a prior version of hardware and could not find a newer version anywhere.  I was able to get a hold of the original owners email address and asked how to get a newer one.  What I got back was a kind of astonishing, and something I had never thought of myself.  One of his kids responded that he had passed suddenly and no one had any information on how to keep the things going so it was all closed down.  They were finally able to get into his email, but that was a far as they could go.

SageTV is opensource so if worst comes to worst I could possibly pay someone to fix it if stopped working.  -Bill

Kind of amazing what things have become critical these days...  -Bill

Nope, there is no solid plan on this front. I have given next of kin some brief instructions on what I'd like to happen.

Ultimately though, I've been consistently providing and supporting this software since 2003, over 21 years now, so even if it disappeared to today, no could complain that they didn't have a good run. In that time numerous other applications have come and gone.

Open source for abandonware doesn't mean much and SageTV is actually many abandoned projects, SageTV itself, OpenDCT, plus the abandoned web servers, skins, plugins and clients so yes you could pay if you could even assemble the people you need do you think you actually would?  You may not appreciate how much it could cost just to keep the lights on.

You recently started looking at NextPVR when I suggested it on the Kodi when you were talking about a SageTV plugin.  There actually was a decade old thread on this on the old SageTV forum https://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthr...ml?t=60816  and of note was the $13,000 they were looking at then https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/380...pvr-plugin to develop it at the time.  That doesn't include updates or ongoing support needed for opensource.

Indeed but recording TV shows isn't one of them I would suggest unless your definition of critical (or circumstances) is vastly different to mine.
