For fun I picked up a Radxa X4 https://radxa.com/products/x/x4/ since I wanted to see how a true minimum Windows 11 client/server would work with NextPVR.  For this test I ordered the 4GB/32MB version so probably you can't go smaller than that since it is well under the Win 11 spec.  This was $80 US $112 CDN (shipping is always high for these SBC's)

I already had an USB 3 power supply so that kept the cost down.  However the first thing I noticed is that as their web site said it does need a fan. It will get hot and throttle or even stop while and since I didn't order the case I ended up for now just placing a 3" fan on it which does the job well enough for testing. Really attaching a fan with thermal paste is the way to go.

Because I only have 4MB disk free I have tried to minimize what apps I've added for testing.  It does show the 8.63GB file from the 24H2 update bug so if that is a true number and I will do a lot more playroom.  For now as this shot shows https://imgur.com/a/8Pd6WXS  NextPVR will capture and play 1080i on a local client without issue for speed, memory or temperature.  When I tried the same channel streaming to a remote web client the numbers were only slightly higher https://imgur.com/a/g4dfpjm with ffmpeg doing h/w decoding.  This is something how SBC can do, not even the RPi5

On the same box I am also able to PXE boot LibreELEC and the server and client use much less resources.  At the same time Windows will support USB tuners that you can't run on Linux.  Network bootting is great the 2.5 GB NIC works well but it might even be better running from emmc or M2 SSD.

Bottom line it is fun to play with and I was surprised Win11 worked as well as it did but I think it might be worth spending the money to get the same Intel N100 in a NUC.

Sounds like a pretty nice device.

Definitely hard to look past the N100/N95 minipc’s available.

So far it has been pretty trouble free in Windows much better than I expected even after 6 hours of live TV.  Unfortunately the Activation watermark bottom right is a bit of a pain so more reason to use a NUC with official Windows.

I can remove it quickly by killing explorer.exe but I couldn't find a permanent solution  without buying Windows so definitely not a cheap solution for Windows users.  Registry hacks etc don't seem to do it.

Because this was turning out to be better device than I expected I decided play some more and buy a copper heatsink from Aliexpress to see how that works and be able to run fanless. The short answer is yes. Temperature now are between 40 and 60 and the copper gets hot to the touch so it definitely taking heat. I tested Live TV and playing some Dolby Vision samples with yauiclent and there were not issues. Given that the CPU can take 20 degrees more without throttling I figure there is a lot more room.

I still won't recommend it over a NUC since it added $40 CDN/$29 US to the price and now is definitely in low end NUC pricing. You can see why thieves are stealing copper all over the place, I thought they'd be cheaper. I could have bought a cheaper one and also a more expensive on too. However must NUCs do have a fan as do the RPi's so this is a nice totally silent alternative.

Stress testing the best I can and running near 100% for half an hour (the n100 with only 4GB is limited for playback from another server this was not quite watchable (at 18% CPU per instance) but it served for stressing the server.

Likewise in second test streaming  two transcoded channels from an ATSC HDHR actually ran cooler.  On the remote machine viewing these there was no speed issues.  With no video it does ran cooler.   We must thank sub for making NextPVR so efficient, it barely needs CPU.

I think my concerns about this running too hot have been solved.

I have one of these running ubuntu server and was considering setting it up running npvr server under docker (I have a couple other containerized network apps running on it). I'm using the stock heatsink/fan assembly, but mine physically sits in my network closet, so noise isn't a consideration.

N100's are for sure a great value at the moment.

For me it wasn't just the noise. Originally I just put a fan on it and that kept it cool enough, but the USB ports are always powered even when the PC was powered off which was pretty annoying. Great for USB tuners I guess.

that can be a good thing or a bad thing - powered USB ports can be good if you're using something like a JetKVM, so that you don't have to use a separate power brick. I haven't looked at the BIOS options but some machines definitely allow "powered USB ports even when the machine is off". Having the option is certainly good

The JetKVM sounds cool so I ordered one on Kickstarter for March, thanks for tip.

yeah, I want one too, but am holding off until they sell retail - their initial estimate was February, but March is probably earliest realistic.
