Ive been using next PVR coupled with Kodi for a short while now since some other PVR servers bit the dust. I'd like to subscribe and add an IPTV service. Sorry if this is a naive question but don't IPTV service require you to have one of their stbs such as a firestick? Is it possible to access the IPTV service via a URL and have next stream channels via Kodi? Or have I got wrong end of stick.  A dummy's guide is needed!!

Check out the Wiki.

You can import the URL in NextPVR device settings or you can create an EXTRA.

thanks I did of course look art wiki before posting but its explanation is quite bare "Enter the URL (the web address) of a M3U file." what? whats a m3u file and where do I find its url. I haven't subscribed to an IPTV service yet. when I do do I get given a url - if so how do they protect their subscriptions. The guy who installed my mesh network tried to explain and from what he was saying I had to have some encrypted usb stick such as firestick or roku. Its the mechanism of subscribing and then integrating the subscription into Nextpvr which Im trying to understand and the wiki hardly helps

your iptv provider will give you a url which contains your username and password if they allow the use of outside apps. Some providers only allow the use of their approved app.

Since subscription IPTV is a grey area my philosophy is "don't ask, don't tell" when it comes to providers. The wiki is based on installing what you have selected. NextPVR supports m3u and Xtream Code access with m3u strongly being preferred so check your source these are the majority. Don't trust anyone that sells "jail broken" FireTV though.

There are also dedicated IPTV boxes typically something like MAG256 using another protocol (often Stalker) that isn't supported by NextPVR so if the provider require a MAC address they probably won't work.

thanks all - spec Martin - yes the IPTV stuff is a minefield - seems to me it is still shrouded in a not good reputation but seems like its becoming more mainstream. looks like best option for me is to do a trial and work out which supplier is content to give me an account and url for the m3u and see if it all works - I'll report back my experiences

We have had this working for years. Kodi as a client on a fire stick. IPTV on a nexrpvr server running windows workstation.

@offroad thats exactly what Im trying to do., At present got as far as getting a 24 hour trial with one of the iptv suppliers - unfortunately it sticks on parsing m3u - not sure its the supplier or my set up takes nealry 20 mins to down load m3u now - as I speak its been 40 mins parsing m3u

I expect it failed, that is too long even with a large list. Make sure you filter out groups when you load the list too.

on the one I trialled there didnt seem to be any groups I could filter on and yes you;re right it was a long list . im trying another one now

I know it sounds like coals to newcastle in the sense that iptv has great catch up opportunities but if one is using Kodi or npvr android app I presume one can record and iptv stream?
