Do Americans typically say 'goodbye' at the end of a phone call? They never seem to on TV. Its kind of like they say a few sentences then just hang up. Maybe its a New Zealand thing, but here we'll typically say some sort of goodbye at the end of a conversation.

(just wait for my next rambling on coke vs pepsi...)

I can't speak for all of us Yanks... 15 years ago I ended the phone call with a goodbye. Now it is usually some sort of awkward indicator like talk to you later, I'll see you later, or ok. But if one person initiates the psuedo goodbye the other person just hangs up.

Pepsi One, or Diet Coke.

And I usually say or get a "goodbye", "Later", something like that. But there are people (my dad...) that when they are done talking, they hang up. I HATE that.

I say "bye", Canadian though not sure if that counts eh.

My company has an office in Scotland, after 5 years, it still cracks me up when they say cheers at the end of a conversation.

I lived in London for a year, and I found cheers to be a rather nice final phrase. Otherwise, I'm really bad at ending a call - it just always seems to end up in an awkward pause and then a "well, ok.. then.. yes.. ok.. bye.." or something similar.

If its a sales or a survey I just hang up.

But I hate those people. If it is someone I like I typically say "Talk to you later"
