Hi all.

I was wondering solutions people are using to locate their ISP assigned IP in order to access GBPVR web admin.

My problem is this. I don't have a static IP. So every once and awhile my public IP changes. I'm looking for a way to collect my IP from my web based router and e-mail it or post it in my web space provided by my ISP.

Any ideas? To access my router it requires I enter a password but no username. I tried IE's "make page available offline" feature, the setup a Auto FTP program to send the file to my web server. This almost worked. But the file that arrived at my webserver was just a internet shortcut rather then the web page it self. Apparently I did not find the actual HTML doc on the HD. I'm not sure where it's located.

Help and suggestions is greatly appriciated.

How about something like this:
http://myip.us/aboutdyndns.html

You can get a URL like yourname.myip.us that refers to your ever changing IP-adress. Haven't tried it ever, but it looks nice.

why don't you use dyndns? (http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/)

this way you can access your web-tv-guide by entering an address like http://whatever.you.like.dyndns.com.

you will need to run a little tool on your compy which periodically tells dyndns.com your public ip.

(never used it for myself, though... i have a static ip Big Grin )

I use http://www.whatismyip.com when I am talking to user's at work. If you have gbpvr setup to automatically send an email after each recording, you can get your external IP from the message header.

I use dyndns.org in conjuntion with DirectUpdate (which runs as a service and will update your account at dyndns.org in the event that your dynamic IP changes).

How do you use this service? Are you able to enter a URL that redirects to your GBPVR log in page? Or to you have to look up your IP at the dyndns.org site and use that to log into your Web interface for GBPVR?

I cant get it to accept "http://123.456.789.012:7647/gbpvr/login.aspx"

----EDIT----

Never mind I figured out what I was doing wrong. I'm such a dumbass.

To those of you who suggested dyndns.org/com. Thanks!! Its exactly what I needed. Actually its even better. Now I can have one place to access all my servers running on my home network. VNC, GB-Pvr and everthing else. Works like a charm. I can't beleive I didn't know about this service before.

The only fault I found was trying to test it behind the same router its connecting through. Just doesn't work. But as long as I can get someone else outside my Lan to test it I'm in great shape.

Thanks, this really made my day.

well... post or pm me your dyndns alias and i tell you if it works *gg*

i never had the courrage to directly open the port of the web-tv-guide since i do not really trust the builtin webserver.
so only port 80 is open which is forwarded to my 'main' compy (apache). a virtual directory (reverse proxy) then leads to the tv compys web-tv-guide.
all protected by .htpasswd *g*

(only because i have paranoia, it doesn't mean that they are not after me!)

I'm using DynDNS too, it works great for all external access, esp with port forwarding via a router.

If you have a Linksys Router (at elast a WRT54G or GS), they have a nice little option in the Router Config to auto-update the IP from the Router itself, so you do not need to even install the IP-updating s/w at all, the router does it automagically. Other routers probably have this also.

A good site for setting up a lot of these sorts of things is:
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm

Apparently "some" providers also use dynamic DNS (not just Dynamic IP's), I made a qurry about this here, so if you have probs with losing contact with the Int Provider, that may be one reason....

Cheers
