So i am interested in getting one of the following boards and am interested in opinions about the onboard video and HD, especially playback of HD .ts recordings also mkvs and mp4's, i am planning on parring with either the AMD triple core 2.3gh or quadcore 2.3gh (depends how i feel about spending the extra for the quad

Board one:

Board two:

If you are willing/able to spend more, I recommend the MSI Diva motherboard ($189):

Open box is $127: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as..._-13130206

It's similar to the boards you are considering but it adds an additional 128MB of Sideport memory onboard for the video. The amp in this thing is phenomenal too Wink

There's also a 7.1 preamp version but after having both, I replaced my preamp with another amp card.
I am really just looking for somthing to make into a basic client that i can hook up to my HDTV in the bedroom. I know a popcorn hour would be good here, but i am exploring all options and will see what fits best for my situation

Still wondering if the ati HD 3200 onboard will be sufficeint for an HD client, atleast 720p and 1080i streams

Thanks
AS Rock motherboards can be crappy so get an Asus or gigabyte or similar. Any old motherboard will do but should have DVI or HDMI output.
I just got a Gigabyte 780G board (the one with US2H suffix) and don't have it sorted yet. Getting good video out of this thing is not a slam-dunk. So far, my old 9600Pro was better. I have a X2 5600+ CPU, which should be enough; I haven't checked the utilization while playing video. I think I currently have a botched XP installation, so a clean re-install will be next. There has been lots of discussion here on 780G boards - in general, the promise has been greater than the delivery. I'll post back if I get a good setup.

I get good performance out of the 3200 (even with Bluray) but then I have the additional sideport memory. I did have to disable Aero in order to get Vector Adaptive deinterlacing. Not sure how well a standard 3200 does, sorry.

This is good new, i think i am probably going to go with this board:

as it has the side port mem and seems to be updated, i just didnt want to spend a lot on this, but still evaluating to see whats out there, i wish there was more info about the next gen NMT and Hauppauge HDMVP
a word of caution.. Am not sure which tuner card you plan on getting but if you get an AMD board, you may have issues with the HVR1600. I returned my HVR1600 and got the ATI650PCIE.
