I picked up a cheap MVP - but the problem is the remote was gone.

Can I use a universal remote with the MVP? I am only using the MVP for playback...I use the GBPVR for recording and then watch the shows over my network.

Thank you,
Tom

Unfortunately your existing universal remote won't have the setup codes for the Hauppauge remote.

You have three possibilities:

1) Order yourself a replacement remote from http://www.hauppauge.com
2) Ebay ahoy!
3) If you are technically minded, google for JP1, read up and decide if it's for you, then get yourself a JP1-compliant universal remote, and upload the Hauppauge keymapping to it.

Hope this helps.

Ebay is probably best but if you want control over everything a Harmony remote is a great solution. One button starts the receiver, changes to the PVR input, changes the audio to stereo, turns on my MVP and TV, changes to the right channel etc etc. You don't need the original remote for anything as you just download the codes from the web. Pricey at around $100 but has a huge WAF.

I ebayed one for <$15...anything more than $25, then you're paying what it retails for w/ shipping.

If you have a Palm or PocketPC device, you could get Novii Remote. It's an app that will turn your Palm into a pretty sophisticated universal remote, where you configure the button layout, learn any remote, macro support, etc. That's what I use with my home entertainment system. The usual universal remotes, like the Philips Pronto, are just too expensive by comparison -- exponentially so. I believe Novii is currently on sale for the holidays, too. http://www.novii.tv

If you go this route, I already have the MVP button layout and codebase that I could get to you. This will cost more than a remote from Hauppauge (not by much), but if you're looking for a universal remote for other purposes as well, this is a very good route to go.

GBPVR system info intentionally left blank because I'm personally
insulted that you can't remember it from previous signatures.

I got my universal remote URC-8910 from amazon for $20; made a JP1 cable for $5 of odds and sods from radio shack and use it to control:

Sony TV, Sony HT Receiver, GI Cable Box, Philips DVD Player, MediaMVP, Xbox, D-Link DVC-1000, and Samsung VCR.

Not bad for less than the price of the Hauppauge remote!
