This post is to document the solution to an error that took me a few horrible days to solve - and I am sure we have all had those days.

I installed the MVPScreenPosition plugin (which I think is really nice - now). After installing the plugin and trying to get the screen postions set on one (I have two) MVPs, the MPV would only give me the following error "Trying to Connect to Server". Since I had only recently installed the second MVP through a wireless Access Point (using two Linksys WRT54G and HyperWRT firmware), I incorrectly assumed that the error was associated with that setup. I assumed this even though it had worked perfectly up to that point (only a few hours). The real problem was related to setting the MVPOffsetY to a negative number. I incorrectly assumed that this would move the screen position to the left. Obviously, I was wrong and this caused the "Failure to Connect to GUI Server" error.

So, if you get connection errors after changing the settings of the Screen Postion, make sure you do not have negative values for any of the settings.

If this is universally not allowed for the screen postion, it would be nice if the MVPScreenPostion plugin would trap negative numbers in the settings validation and therefore prevent this error by newbies like me.

Hope this helps somebody spend a few days of their life better than my last few.

You can use negative number. You also should use odd numbers. Width + offsetx shouldnt add up to more than 720. height + offsety shouldnt add up to more than 480 (576 for PAL).

I thought negative numbers should be acceptable. However, I had not been able to get MVP#2 to find the server for 2 days. Then when I changed the value back to zero, the MVP fully immediatly loaded. To check I set the value back to -4 in the config.xml file and it would not find the server again. When I changed it again to zero or a positive integer it immediately found the server again. My MVP#2 is an E1 model.

So I don't know what is going on. All I know is I have GB-PVR back up and running. My family and I love it - a truely awesome application and wonderful addition to our life. Many thanks to all who have contributed their time and effort to create and support it.
