Peculiar file size and bit rate question

I'm sure that I've missed something here, but note these two file properties from Video Mpeg Wizard.

1. The 3.30GB file was captured using my Hauppauge 250 card, with WinTV2000 using the DVD Standard setting.

2. The 2.84GB file was captured using my Hauppauge 350, card with GB-PVR using the High setting.

#1 has a bit rate of 7040 var.
#2 has a bit rate of 8250 var.

same settings otherwise. Same show recorded on two different machines (1 minute missed on #2)

My question is, why is #2 a smaller file size? It has a considerably higher bit rate. I just thought this was funny.

No one? I was hoping that someone could explain why/how this happened.

It mad me wonder if the 7040bit rate file is better than the 8250bit rate file. Heh.
