I have been using GBPVR with Hauppauge PVR USB2 and MVP. I am now contemplating building a close-coupled solution with GBPVR, however I cannot get my head around how I use a hardware MPEG encoder in combination with a Freeview card.

I would ideally like to use PCI solutions for PVR and I would also like a Nova-T PCI to bring Freeview on-board too.

The questions I have are :

- Can I pass the output of the Nova-T into the PVR150 across the PCI ?

- How can I hardware encode the output of a Freeview card ?
- Am I stuck with software encoding ?

- Is there a reference desgin that simplifies the process ?

Any hints and suggestions would help

I am not speaking from practical experience so feel free to ignore this post and tell me if I'm wrong but isn't digital television already encoded into a compressed format? Recording to disk from a digital TV card probably doesn't require any re-encoding.

This is merely my two-penneth, please, please, please correct me if I am wrong.

OK fair comment.

To clarify, what I want to do is encode/compress freeview channels as MPEG via a hardware chip.

Yes, its already encoded as MPEG2 by the broadcaster.

From the Hauppauge Support FAQ:

What format does my product capture in?

All of the Digital product range capture in RAW MPEG2 format. This is how it is broadcasted, it will not capture in any other format.

So I can therefore assume that GBPVR will directly save the output of a Freeview card (say Nova-T) to disk with no further compression/encoding required.

Therefore all I need is a single card (say Nova-T) for digital TV and my PVR-USB2 can be used to capture analogue devices.

Thanks to all - problem solved
