Hi

Is it possible to keep the movie aspect ratio (black borders) ie when viewing a 16:9 movie on a 4:3 screen?

Thanx

Not on the MVP unless you use ffdshow (search the forums for more info on this), but if you are running your display directly from your computer, the F7 key cycles through the aspect ratio modes available. (I have mapped this key to the "mute" key on my hauppauge remote).

There are quite a few aspect ratios available (sub has allowed for viewing 4:3 pictures on a 16:9 as well as a few other ones). As weisguy says in this thread, commenting out all but the 0, 0, 1, 1; 0, 0.125, 1, 0.875 and 1 0, 0.2, 1, 0.8 settings in the config.xml file (use notepad to do this) leaves you with just three aspect ratios - if you are viewing on a 4:3 screen, these relate to fullscreen, 16:9 and 2.35:1 respectively.

cheers,

tieke

I never could get ffdshow to work via my MVP's, in the end I just changed the parameters in config.xml for ffmpeg such that it resized accordingly and gave the correct aspect ratio.

What Parameters did you change exactly?

This is what I use:-

<MVPFFmpegTranscodeCmdLinePAL>-y -i "{SOURCE_FILE}" -b 2400 -r 25 -s 604x400 -padtop 90 -vcodec mpeg2video "{DEST_FILE}"</MVPFFmpegTranscodeCmdLinePAL>

What I found was that if I used typical PAL parameters such as 720x576 or 352x288, the MVP seemed to autoscale to a 4:3 ratio.

By choosing something a little off with my 604x400, the MVP doesn't scale but instead bungs the letterboxed pic at the top of the screen leaving a large black band at the bottom which I bodged by the padtop 90 parameter.
