I moved some files to a Win 2003 64 (standard), and I forgot how much I was going to miss simpe file sharing. I added the pvr as a user, but I won't auto-connect after they've both been restarted (and the connect option on the XP Home pvr doesn't have a checkbox to remember login).

How can I...
a) have the pvr remember the login to 2003 so it can connect itself, or
b) have 2003 let people connect to the folder w/o logging in?

Create a local user account on the W2K3 server called pvr, for example, create a batch file and put it in the pvr Start, Programs, Startup folder. Contents as follows...

net use z: \\servername\sharename /userConfusedervername\pvr thepassword

Obviously use whatever drive letter you want instead of z:

See if that works.

Cheers,

bgowland: That's a pretty easy soloution, and thx. It may or may not work when it seems it can lose the login if the server reboots, and not the pvr (invoking the bat).

tipster: I was hoping there was something like that, and I look forward to trying that. You know your W2k/2003 servers! It's ideal for me since this is just a internal lan server I use for code testing, and it doesn't need all the beefy security of an exposed system. I was looking for a why to get it to back off a bit.

I'm using the 64 version now, but I am not thrilled w/ it. It seems like little gain over 32, and w/ not everything able to run to boot (even using some mixed-mode options). I may have my work set me up w/ 2003 32 Standard.

Not sure about Home edition but with Pro this isn't a problem. I have a persistent share from my PVR machine to my general desktop - the PVR is 24/7 but the desktop gets shutdown after use. The connection on the PVR shows that it is 'Disconnected' when I bring the desktop up but by simply accessing the mapped drive from the PVR, it reinstates the connection.

I actually didn't set it up with a batch file as I demonstrated earlier, I just mapped the drive by right-clicking on My Computer on the PVR machine, selecting the logical drive letter and UNC path then selected 'Connect using a different username' and entered the DESKTOP\Username credentials. I then selected 'Reconnect at logon' (is that last bit unavailable in Home edition?).

The Reconnect at logon switch in the Map Network Drive wizard is the equivalent to /PERSISTENT:YES when using 'NET USE' from the command line.

There's also a trick you can use which gives 'all areas' access to admin shares on a machine...

net use \\MYSERVER\IPC$ /USER:MYSERVER\SomeAdminAccount thepassword

Once you've done this you can access any drive through the admin share, e.g., dir \\MYSERVER\C$ works.

Cheers,
Brian

Actually, the solution turned to be stupidier than I thought. It's an eMachine, so the user is actually "Owner". Once I added that to 2003, and then made the server a network place (drag server onto netword icon), it worked.

Thx for the help, both, anyway. That was info that I still did need.

One more question for those that knwo their Win 200x: What do you need to do to permissions to let GB delete? I added the pvr w/ admin, but it doesn't seem to allow it. At least it doesn't error...it just tries, and does nothing.

I'm sure I'm just missing something easy.

nm....it's looking like I got it. It seemed to kick in after a restart. It shouldn't need that, but it's working.
