Internet Security Recommendations

I am a long term user of Norton Internet Security but I am getting the renewal nag messages and considering alternatives. Norton is very resource hungry and I am sure it has been improved upon by other software.

I need a good firewall and virus scanner and probably some anti spyware as well for my PVR which I also use for general Internet use and is connected 24/7 to my broadband connection.

Any recommendations for some good security software that is secure, light on resources and not too expensive?

I have used ZoneAlarm for firewalling, and Grisoft AVG for antivirus. Both of them come in free personal editions.

Use v-com's systemsuite. Find it very quick and has some other nice utilities.

A decent Linksys or Netgear hardware firewall may be all you need. They don't cost all that much, use no CPU cycles on your machines, and with SPI, are reasonably secure for a home network.
I don't miss the nagging of verifying every little network access either.

I couldn't agree more. I don't use a software firewall, but the one in the router.
For antispy I use Microsofts antispyware, sometimes adaware from lavasoft, both work very well I'm told, I only run them once a week or so. But it has been a while since I had a spywareinfection. For antivirus I use Nod32 from Eset. Very low on system resources, never failed me. Updates sometimes several times a day.

Agreed. You'd still need antivirus program, though.

Nod32, it really is the best, it's the only program (with GBPVR ofcourse) I recommend to other people. Smile

I use the same, plus the Microsoft Antispyware, PLUS a router, PLUS using SSH to access from outside the network, PLUS (and this is the biggest) - Firefox.

I have never had a problem - virus, spyware, trojans, worms, phishing... safe as houses.

1) Evryone should have a router on their broadband connection. Get one with SPI (stateful packet inspection).

2) Have you checked with your ISP. Here they both give a free suite. Cable is F-Secure and DSL is ZoneAlarm suite.

Nod32 is not free, though. I use AVG (free.grisoft.cz). It's pretty good, lightweight.
