I've just been hit by a laggy MVP and accidentally ended up with 3 successive OK's on the System menu.

First one, to System menu
Second one, Shutdown
Third one, "Are you sure you want to shutdown?" with OK as the default.

Not so good!

Default actions should always be "non destructive" especially as I was in the middle of recordings.

Please change the default to CANCEL or at least check that there are no recordings in progress and offer a follow on dialog to cancel those too.

Thanks
David.

While that seems to be a convention (like having to scroll to the bottom for watch after selecting a show) I disagree. I am typically trying to shutdown in the middle of the night half asleep and all of the up-down-sideways is difficult. I prefer the action of click-through. You have three chances.

Do you use an MVP where it's sometimes sluggish to respond, sometimes several seconds later? This is the problem, I didn't even want to be on the system menu but because nothing had happened, I pressed whatever buttons I needed and because nothing happened, wasn't sure if they had been transmitted so did so again and then it jumped to the system menu and the rest is as described.

Good GUI design suggests that you should never set default action to a destructive one.

Are you sure you want to delete? Yes should not be default
Are you sure you want to format? Yes should not be default

Even phraseology is quite a craft, you should not have:-

"Are you sure you do not want to save changes?" Yes/No/Cancel as you have to apply a moments thought to work out what the question and action will result in.

Correct would be something like:-

"Save changes to document?" Yes/No/Cancel where Yes is the default as it is the safe option. It is natural to confirm a positive action.

Default destructive is not good, especially when there's no alert that the recording service is active. You may change your mind when you've discovered that your half asleep shutdown lost something that was mid record. Wink

i've seen this very phraseology in the uninstaller for some spyware. "Are you sure you don't want to remove {name of spyware proggy here}?" with yes and no as the only choices. i'd clicked yes the first time without actually reading (speed-skim), and then it dropped back to the windoze add/rem progs box, and it was still there... tried it again and actually READ it. spyware authors suck balls.
