Transferring Shows from a Tivo to PVR?

It seems as though this summer, ABC will be reairing LOST Season 2, and I've been tivoing all the episodes so far. Meanwhile I'm watching Season 1 on DVD with my family (I've seen the whole show, my family is just starting now). Anyway, I'd like to get the Season 2 episodes off the TiVo (because ~25 episodes is a big space requirement) so that my family and I can watch them after we finish Season 1 (and without having to wait for the real DVD's which come out like a week before Season 3 starts). I have a Hauppauge WinTV PVR USB2 capture card. I'm aware I could use that to tape, but don't feel like redoing all the settings while I'm home for the summer (because I use it at school). So can I use the Hauppauge card to transfer taped shows from the Tivo to the hard drive? Thanks.

If I understand you correctly, this is easily done.

Just plug your TiVo A/V outputs into the inputs on your PC (I use S-video into my PVR-150 card and plug the audio cable (RCA plugs at one end, 3.5 mm PC stereo plug at the other) into my sound card's line in. Then, using GB-PVR config, set up a new capture source for your s-video input (call it something like "TiVo Source") and define a single channel for it (call it "Tivo", maybe). GB-PVR will assign the next available channel number to the new channel.

Now you should be able to watch whatever is currently playing on your TiVo by using the new channel number in GB-PVR live TV. So then you can use the record button on your remote to start recording it to mpeg. Or (and this is easier to manage) set up your TiVo to play the show you want to record and pause it, then set up a manual recording in GB-PVR for your new channel with a start time of five minutes before the current time and duration of whatever you want to record, hit play on your TiVo remote and your TiVo show will be recorded to mpeg.

You can use the same approach to transfer video from VCR tapes to GB-PVR mpeg files.

Alternatively use wintv2000 if you don;t want to mess around with your gbpvr config. IMHO it is better suited to this task as you just click on "record"

This may be beyond your scope of knowledge, but I set it up in WinTV2000, got it to regonize the composite input, and I've got sound but no picture. I checked my connections to be sure but don't what's gone wrong. Any ideas?

EDIT: I tried the Overlay Manager for WinTV2000 with no luck. I then added the channel "tivo" to gbpvr. Again - audio but no picture.

To be honest, I've had nothing but trouble with WinTV2000. I'll get it working, then change something in my system and immediately hit some frustrating issue like you are experiencing. Also the UI is terrible and, personally, I prefer using the GB-PVR UI for everything media related if at all possible. I guess that's why I suggested using GB-PVR instead. At least you know GB-PVR works .

It takes a couple of minutes to set up the extra GB-PVR capture source but, once it's set up, it works seamlessly with the rest of your GB-PVR environment and has the definite advantage that recordings will show up in the "Recordings" list off the main menu. (So, if you use the right file naming standards, the episodes of LOST that you recorded using GB-PVR and the ones you recorded from the TiVo will all show up in the same folder and be indistinguishable from one another.)

Alright - so I tried setting it up in GBPVR, I added a capture source (capture Source #1, Source: Coposite #1 external) and added it as Channel 1 (unused in my previous settings), and get sound but no picture. Any clue?

Well, sounds like you've basically got it working if you can select channel 1 and get sound (btw - I should have said to connect the audio to your capture card's audio in, not your sound card's audio in - but looks like you figured that out :o). So now its just a matter of getting the video working.

If you connect the composite cable from your TiVo directly to your TV, are you getting a picture? I'm not sure what inputs are available on a PVR-250 (I'm using a PVR-150). Did you try using Composite #2 or any of the other "Sources" for the capture source? I find S-video gives a better picture than composite but I've had it working with composite also. If you've got any other "external tuner" sources, such as a VCR, you could try that and see if you get different results. Basically, my experience has been that, if the cable you are using will produce a picture when connected to your tv, it should work when connected to your card as an external tuner.
