Hello, there..

I should stress that I'm a complete newbie at this PVR lark, so be gentle :-)

I'm the computer technician for a large High School in Scotland. We have just installed a (fairly expensive) Freeview streaming system made by a company called Exterity (http://www.exterity.co.uk).. Basically, a small server with a couple of tuner cards allows any Freeview channel to be watched on any client PC by broadcasting each channel as a multicast stream (as in, each channel has its own unique multicast address)..

On the client PC, a small app listens for the SAP announcements and displays a list of channels available. That app then simply passes the channel parameters to VLC (or Media Player if preferred)... You can also right click and select Record, and it will record rather than view the broadcast channel.

What I was looking for is something to help my colleague out. He is responsible for recording certain (Educational, natch!) TV shows for certain departments. Up until now, he's been relying on a series of VHS recorders. I figure there should be some way to use this new multicast TV system where he can specify something along the lines of "between 8am and 9:30am every Monday, record channel x" - in other words, a PVR..

Now this is where I get confused... Each and every PVR software I've looked at implies (or seems to?) that the client PC has the tuner cards installed. Which is obviously not the case here. Does anyone know of ANY PVR application which supports listening for multicast broadcast details? As opposed to viewing via a card?

I know it's possible, as the company showed me a quick demo of their WIP not finished yet PVR, which they said was based on Showshifter(?)..

Sorry if this is all terribly vague - I hope you grasp what I'm getting at :-)

TV - In school? - On every PC? - How times have changed...

I see Exterity say they have released their PVR app on 10 July - Maybe you missed that this is now out of beta?

I would suspect the above would give the most satisfactory results - And give you one company to shout at if/when it goes t*ts up... Big Grin

Alternativley their are many network stream recorders - I'm not sure if any have the timer feature - but you may be able to cobble something together with scheduled tasks at a batch script?

1) It ought not to be too much trouble to schedule VLC to record streams using windows scheduler
2) Run GBPVR on the server (but not sure how this might interfere with the streaming software)
3) Have a look at the ubistream plugin - I haven't yet used this myself, but it seems it may do what you are asking http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Plugin/UbuStream

Keep in mind that GBPVR is not for commercial use. I don't know if that applies here.

Hello, there...

Many thanks for the suggestions.. I'll give them a try.

I apologise for not getting back sooner - I'd expected to receive a notification email telling me there had been a reply. Oops..

I'll give it a crack, and let you know... I'm mildly looking forward to work now (sad act! Ed)..

Cheers,
Gerard

Hi there...

Well, I've had a few minutes at work to play with this, and....

I can now WATCH the multicast streams - they're listed under Web TV. Hurrah!

Now the bad news.. That's all I can do... I can't seem to find a way to RECORD these from within the gbpvr GUI... Am I missing something really obvious here?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received :-)

Cheers,
Gerard
