Ever since my new build from about 2 months ago (which included my first upgrade to version 97.x) I have noticed poorer viewing quality on my recorded shows, while noticing the HUGE viewing quality increase in LiveTV and DVD's from the Purevideo hardware advantages. One of my tuners has remained unchanged and signal source (analogue cable) has not changed. The video output is through the onboard component outpute of a Nvidia 6150 mobo. Coupled with the Purevideo decoder giving access to the Purevideo enchanced deinterlacing and video processing. This is VERY noticeable in LiveTV and DVD's.
I have experimented to verify the difference in quality between the LiveTV and recordings by stopping a high quality recording midway through and then doing a side-by-side to the LiveTV. It was pretty clear that the video was much less vibrant and it appeared as if no deinterlacing was taking place at all in the recordings.
It had been brought up previously by numerous users of the Purevideo Codec including myself (a lot of discussion when the Purevideo Registry changes post went up) that the Purevideo decoder systemtray icon would come up while LiveTV or a DVD was running, but not with recording playback. The consensus was that the purevideo was running, but for some reason (suspected at being driver related) the icon would just not pop up for Directshow filtering of Mpeg2 recordings. If that was the case, since most other players built into other PVRs use the Directshow player, the behavior should be the same. I loaded up a trial version of SageTV 5.0 and tested that out, but sure enough, while watching recorded Mpeg2 programs the Purevideo icon popped up in the systemtray and looked great. Even shows recorded in GBPVR appeared with the quality and sharpness that I would see in LiveTV.
The other reason that Im starting to wonder if this is a case of how GBPVR may be handling the Directshow filters differently is I have put together my FFDshow setup and I am receiving the same behavior out of that as well. The native logs are showing the Purevideo Codec being used and FFDshow being called up, but none of the enhancing features / deinterlacing features of Purevideo or FFDshow are being called up during Mpeg2 playback. With FFDshow I set up its OSD to show CPUusage and such. It shows and all the enhancements apply themselves in WMP, Media Player Classic, and VLC (using both overlay and VMR), but none of them will show in GBPVR.
Is there any difference in the graph or filters being called up in Mpeg2 playback that is any different from LiveTV or DVD? I could understand DVD, but i would think LiveTV would behave exactly the same. I did notice in the native logs that when the decoder and everythng were called up that there was an additional log to pull up "deinterlace settings" that does not appear in the logs for watching an Mpeg2 recording. Would this have anything to do with it?
Sorry for the long post. Hope it does not drive you away sub
