1 PC still on XP. Installed one of the ffdhshow nightly builds with DXVA.
When played in media player any H264 MKV, or GBPVR HD recording, the ffdshow DXVA icon appears in task bar and CPU load is <10%.
But in GBPVR any HD recordings or live HDTV, ffdhow DXVA is not being used (even though in config H264 decoder is set to ffdhow DXVA). It falls back to a software only decoder.
MKV's behave differently - the ffdhsow DXVA icon does appear, but the video stays stuck on the first frame, only the audio progresses.
I tried different renderers and found that MKV's do play properly if overlay is used, but even in overlay HDTV or recordings result in black screen.
I never did have any luck getting DXVA to work in GBPVR on XP - so just wondered if anyone has? BTW the video card is an ATI 3450.

might wanna check for a newer ffdshow nightly...
but it may just come down to your demux, try using the mkv and mpeg2 demux from mpchc...
and ffdshow's dxva decoder can only handle certain types [level/profile] of h264....and also depends on the card..
i have used it with a 3450 tho, and it should work same as any other ati card, tho that card is barely up to the task for some blurays..
but several types of 264 would only play on software decode or other codecs..

one good thing is you can use ffdshow's semi-software decode for a great picture with all types of 264..just set reg ffdshow output to nv12 colorspace and enable h264 decoder..
oh and check the 'set interlaced output',etc on output screen..
[works great for me on even a intel g41[no hw decoder on board] ]
in fact i can get it to work on pretty much any card...as long as it does hw deinterlacing..[necessary for best picture quality] with only half cpu usage..

the video stuck on first frame seems to be a problem with only certain encodes..just skip once to get it going...but it also suggests to me the demux not working right..
the mpchc mpeg2 demux works great on .m2ts and pretty much anything else... .ts .mpg .vob,etc....
but get the mpeg2 demux from earlier version..latest ones don't work as well..
v1.2.908.0 is a good ver of the mpeg2 demux...not sure why the latest doesn't work ok and they haven't fixed it yet last time i checked...

only use mkv splitter from above...but try the mpchc video decoder for an alternative to ffdshow h264...may work better for you..share much code with ffdshow..

i just checked on mine and seem sit's a lot to do with the demux...i have several mp4 i encoded and while most play easily, some only play with a certain demux...1.3.1586...
newest doesn't work in this case...same with latest mpeg2 demux...
i just settled on 1.2.908 for mpeg2 demux and 1.3.1586 for mp4 demux...i would choose 1.3.1586 for mkv too.. but i can't find them to dl anywhere...
[i can post them if need be]
but keeping those 2 i have no problem playing any mp4 or h264 files...[no matter the decoder, tho i'm using ffdshow dxva right now..]
if yo can find another maker of .mkv demux it may help also...
[not many out there]

oh yea, you might wanna change the settings of dxva filter, select 'ignore number of reference frames' in compatibility....

but i'm not sure it will ever work for livetv if it's in h264 .ts format..something about not having some info needed for livetv..
should work for all not-in-progress recordings tho..

Thanks for the tips - I will look into the demux being used. I have been using ffdshow or CoreAVC with hardware deinterlacing for ages, but wanted to try again and get DXVA going.
What I still don't understand is why recordings and mkv's play fine with DXVA in media player - and I am not talking about media player classic home cinema, I mean in the actual media player classic from Windows 98, or media player 11 in Windows XP. (Of course MPC-HC works also once FFdhow DXVA is added to external filters and the internal H264 filter is turned of.) To me, this indicates that there is nothing wrong with the merits, splitters, or demux being used in Windows, as it only affects PVRX2.
I'm starting to remember why I gave up trying the last time, and why I now only purchase Nvidia cards!

it's really that that card is just barely strong enough to do hardware decode...
my 4650 has been great...3650 too...they do have more stream units tho..
even a 4350 has double what a 3450 does..
the only one i get perfect results with is the 3450 with 500mhz ddr [1000mhz] mem...most only have 400[800]..
but still it would work on them, just occasional skip..and all work great in win7 for me..

mediaplayer 9/10/11 uses vmr7 to play usually in XP..

and mpchc video decoder should give similar results to ffdshow's dxva tho possibly a bit buggier..
i would check the graphs to be sure somethign else isn't stuffing up the works..
