I upgraded my ATI 9600XT to Nvidia 7600GS and was very disapointed because the picture lost sharpness (everything appears very slightly out of focus). I suspect this is due to poor scaling on the 7600GS (I'm running 1280x768 native resolution on my LCD TV). Additionally I found it messed-up the gamma and no matter how hard I tried to adjust the gamma correction, I couldn't get it right. I also found the Nvidia drivers to be very flakey, and the 90 series driver has overly complicated and duplicated video adjustments.

I have just purchased a Gigabyte X1650 passive cooled video card, and am in the process of installing it now.

Csy,

Thanks for you're reaction. So my new card must be an ATI The Ati x1650 is not for sell here in the local stores. I see the X1600PRO SilentPipe 2 here but this one needs 2 slots.

Are there other things i have to watch for when selecting an ATI card
-Must have a 128 bit mem interface
-Must be able to do advanced hardware de interlacing
-
-

Thanks in advance....

Note my previous post is simply my own experience, and I'm not saying that you must buy an ATI card (there are many people who really like Nvidia).

Generically speaking, 128bit memory interface is required for display resolutions above SD (720x480 / 720x576), and hardware de-interlacing on mid/high-end cards provides spatial-temporal de-interlacing alogorithm which is the best you can get.

If you are going to use a HDTV now or in the near future, check out my experiences in the following link.

That was one of my goals, too. I think my nVidia 6600 card and setup accomplishes that goal. However, it required a lot of experimentation to get it working right. Judging by my own experience and others that I've Googled, maximizing video quality always requires some tweaking.

Quote:Are the problems with the nvidia easy to solve? And do you think that there are ati cards who also can produce good quality?

"Easy to solve" is a judgement call; I was able to get my system producing video of comparable quality to my DVD settop after deinstalling a lot of MPEG2 decoders, installing another (PureVideo), and manipulating a lot of different configuration items. I didn't have to mess with the registry or anything like that.

I think you can accomplish your goal with cards based on either nVidia or ATI GPUs. The reason I originally chose nVidia is Linux driver availability. I'd probably buy another nVidia GPU based on familiarity.

nVidia software has a lot of potential but can be very quirky.

Thanks for the input guys,

It seems that the most HTPC have an Nvidia. I don't like the experimentation because i have not verry much time to spend behind my pc to get things work. (became father for the second time)

So i hope i can get for the easy way and ordered the Ati Sapphire Radeon X1600XT Ultimate hoping it will forfill my needs. Also i don't have a LCD tv to play HDTV but a regular CRT television.

I hope i made a good choice, I will report back afther installing to let you guys know......

Thanks again for all the input.
