It looks like my regular batch job to get the EPG has been failing since the beginning of November. It runs xmltv.exe with tv_grab_uk_rt - on investigation, this continually fails with could not fetch http://xmltv.radiotimes.com/xmltv/xxx.dat error 500 server closed connection (where xxx represents the RT channel number - this varies from run to run).

Now, I'd be tempted to put this down to the Radio Times web server having some problems, but I can't believe it's been like this for the last 8 days. Had anyone else had similar problems?

There were some errors a few weeks ago, but mine has been working fine since then. I fire mine of from the XP scheduler and grab 7 days worth (which seems to have solved the problems with the times of some programs shifting a few minutes and screwing TV guide display up).

Also no problems here using the same server/method of grabbing.

I've been trying it on and off all evening. Here's the cut 'n paste from the last attempt:

E:\XMLTV>xmltv tv_grab_uk_rt --output tv.xml
Timezone is +0000
adding '--share=E:/XMLTV/share/xmltv'
All data is the copyright of the Radio Times website
<http://www.radiotimes.com> and the use of this data is restricted to personal use only.

finding channels: 0% [ ]could not fetch http://xmltv.radiotimes.com/xmltv/channels.dat, error: 500 Server closed connection without sending any data back, aborting

Sometimes it fails getting channels.dat, other times that works but it then fails getting one of the specific data files. I've tried this from two completely different machines, so I don't think it's anything specific there, although it could be down to my internet connection, I guess.

However, I downloaded and ran XMLTVGUI, and that seemed OK. I'm reluctant to move to using this as a) it's more change/work and b) I'm not sure it can be run as an unattended batch job.

XMLTVGUI works great (been using it for months), I just call XmltvConsole.exe from UpdateEPG.bat - having setup channels in the XMLTVGUI

You'll need to point your capture source EPG source to the file generated by XMLTVGUI

Did anyone find out in the end about RadioTimes changing its programming schedules around so much? No problems for me about the XMLTV download failing though.

I reduced my capture to 7 days too and the problems went away (typical that they should have shown up when the girlfriends folks were staying -making my precious PVR look bad Wink ), but I much prefered it when I had two weeks worth of (accurate) data, and I dont want to screw up my recordings for the next couple of weeks by setting it back to 14 days if I can help it.

Thats the one I use all the time. Once you setup your channels with the GUI bit I just fire it up with:- (include the quotes)

"E:\Program Files\XMLTV GUI\XmltvGUI.exe" /grab /d7

Martin

p.s. I'm still on 7 days - If you go for a full download, it gets messy going back to 7 days if they're still shifting things around - it may only be a couple of minutes, but damn annoying.
