if you have one Hauppauge 150 hooked up to the digital box, and a Hauppauge 500 hooked up directly to the feed, would you be able to record digital cable channels on the 150, and normal channels on the 500- which would have access to far fewer channels? thanks for help in advance.

Yes, that is possible. You should think about which order you add the capture sources in the config app though. There are a few threads that discusses this. The consensus is that you want the one with fewer channels to be used in the first hand (so that the one(s) with more channels is free for use when you want to watch the channels that are only available there...) I think that gbpvr goes from the top of the list and down when recording, and the other way around for live tv, but you should double check that.
