My main video server is just a simple celeron D 2.6 Ghz.
It works well.
However it takes forever to encode MPEG2 to something smaller such as XVID.

This motherboard can handle a pentium D dual core.
What encoders out there will utilize the dual core to speed things up?

Who with dual Cores is using what & how much of a boost did you see going to dual core?

I do not have a specific piece of software to recommend for using with a dual core but check out the link below for some idea on encoding times for different CPUs.

http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?m...&chart=177

One thing to keep in mind is that even if the Dual core is not faster you will be able to do more cpu intensive tasks at the same time. For example many software conversion apps allow multiple instances, which means that you could convert two files in the same amount of time it used to take to do one.

Interesting.

A $99 dollar pentium D 820 cpu will encode hi-def mpeg to h.264 roughly twice as fast as my present Celeron.

Thanks!

Take into account that that $99 PentiumD runs very very hot when integrating it into your system.

I saw that, but the $99 pentium D is an 820 & that is a 95W piece compared to the 830 & 840 which are 135W pieces.

The 820 is apparantly missing something that is enabled on the 830 & 840.
840 seems almost non-existant online & the 830 goes for around $150 so I may just go with the 820.
