So i'm thinking about picking up a small tube tv (probably 27") for <$300. Many of the recent ones have atsc tuners (usa) and display 480i. So w/ such a tuner, I'd be able to pick up hdtv signals right? Would a 16:9 signal just have two bars on the top and bottom of screen? Does atsc signal on a standard definition tube tv look better than an ntsc signal? I guess I could spend twice that amount and pick up a cheap 32" lcd hdtv...

In my experience, even a down-converted HD picture looks much better than standard NTSC.

However, as you mentioned, for a couple hundred more you can get 32" LCDs now. I picked up a Viewsonic a couple months ago for about $500 after rebate and I've seen lots of them lately for $400-$500. They would probably be a better deal. Check out this site for daily deals: http://www.techbargains.com/.

how does gbpvr look on 32" lcd? i.e. i've seen bad results from trying to play low-resolution (720x480) content on hdtv's. have u tried streaming gbpvr recorded shows from tv tuner through mediamvp to the 32" lcd?

I have it connected to the GB-PVR PC via DVI (actually DVI to HDMI) from a 6200 card and it looks pretty good, both SD and HD. I drive it at 1280x720. The TV has several zoom settings so you can choose how to display the various formats (letterbox, pillarbox, etc.). I haven't tried it with an MVP. I'm probably not as discriminating as some but I'm satisfied with it.
